Do Words Have Voices: Talking to Martin Boyce's Installations   Pick-button-0f29c6c075c514ef3a12253f1d60018e

Martin Boyce at Museum für Gegenwartskunst April 25th - August 16th
Posted 6/19/15

Walking to the Museum Für Gegenwartkunst is, unavoidably and of itself, a romantic passage. Located just off the Rhine River, the experience of water is embedded into the ethos of building—both figuratively and practically within the architecture of the space—as viewable from the glass hallways between the museum’s galleries. The river, a fittingly meandering foil to the small path that leads to Martin Boyce’s current exhibition, offers an experience of aesthetisized n... [more]

When you walk onto Basel’s Messeplatz this week you can’t miss it: the temporary Gesamtkunstwerk with the rhetorical title Do We Dream Under The Same Sky. It consists of a bamboo structure designed by architects Nicholaus Hirsch and Michel Müller. Inside, chef Antto Melasniemi manages his personally designed solar kitchen, working with locally grown spices and herbs. Besides unusual fusion snacks such as fish ice cream and "bastard pad Thai," invented by Melasniemi and artist Rirkrit... [more]

Art or Not?

Art or Not? Art Fairs make for perfect mockery material. This year we've been trawling the art on show in and around Basel and coming across some riotus work, with equally absurd press releases, that all leaves us with belly ache. Can this be for real? Important art is often so confusing... This week: which of the works below was created by an esteemed Swiss artist who represents her country at the Venice Biennale this year, and has artworks currently for sale at Art Basel? #1 For the artist,... Basel, June 2015: Maxa Zoller is the new curator of this year’s Film Sector at Art Basel. Leading up to her film programme this week, Olga Stefan spoke with the Cairo-based curator and lecturer about the blurred lines between film and video art and their implications on modes of viewing; how film can be commodified; political films and their impact at art fairs; and the spaces of free expression in Cairo. Olga Stefan: Could you describe for us what this all-encompassing category of... [more]

Art Basel turns 46 this year. There’s little new to say about the original mega-fair, which had 90 exhibitors at its very first 1970 edition, and 281 exhibitors just three years later. With a maturing satellite scene—Liste celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, Design Miami hits double digits, and Volta enters its pre-teens—we know what to expect from much of the week’s establishment lineup. But as the art world grows, so too does the number of fairs and events stra... [more]

Mathieu K. Abonnenc has a complicated relationship with his past. For his solo presentation in the Statements section of Art Basel, which kicks off this week, Abonnenc, an artist born in French Guiana who now lives in Paris, digs into the history and effects of colonialism and its representations within society. You might have seen Abonnenc's work in the Belgian Pavilion as part of Vincent Meessen’s project at the Venice Biennale. His most recent works, such as Forever Weak and Ungrateful... [more]

Positions, one of Art Basel Miami Beach's nine sectors, was conceived as a platform for established gallerists to present to one major project by a single artist they represent. Visiting curators and collectors meanwhile lick their lips at the presumed cream of the crop, with the new talents of 16 global commercial art venues being introduced to the arena. What is involved in a gallery's decision making process as they select an artist from their roster? How will their artist stand out to the ferve... [more]

The utterance of “Basel” rolls off the tongue like a whisper. No matter the inflection or language in which it’s spoken, the name of the small city in Switzerland is synonymous with one of the most influential art fairs of the calendar year. For a single week in the middle of June nearly all hotels are booked. The quaint and picturesque city in Northern Switzerland that straddles France and Germany, measuring a mere 9.2 square miles, becomes an international hub where hundreds... [more]

Art fair participants complain, what’s new? But instead of the usual lamentations about hesitant collectors keeping their pocket books closed, this year dealers’ biggest worry was overly aggressive buyers. They just waltzed into a booth, pointed out a work and did not take no for an answer, even if the work had already been sold. This marks the cautious upswing in the art market which has been getting back up on its feet after being hit by the global financial crisis. Although Art B... [more]

The Dreiländereck (literally, “angle of the three countries”) rises up on the northern end of the Kleinhuningen Port in Basel. It’s a metal pillar, resembling a silver screwed missile, oriented towards the sky and signaling the exact point where three nations—Switzerland, France, Germany—meet together. Basel is a city wedged into the core of Europe; it’s a border town, stuck in the offshoots of Swiss mountains and split in two by an ample bight of the Rhine. It... [more]

Much more interesting than the description of the 14 Rooms performance series, which will take place as part of Art Basel and is organized by star-curators Klaus Biesenbach and Hans Ulrich Obrist, is its call out for participants/performers to take part in it: “If you have an identical twin, use the opportunity to be part of Damien Hirst’s work. War veterans are sought after for part of Santiago Sierra’s performance, and anyone who speaks colloquial British-English and is similar... [more]

Satellite fairs and art shows seem to be mushrooming around their big brothers. With nearly two-dozen fairs, Miami is definitely the leader, followed by the Armory show, which this year had at least eight side fairs. The month of June though is reserved for the old continent and Art Basel, which is one of the oldest contemporary art fairs and one of the most important when it comes to the concentration of well-established art galleries. Some 4,000 artists will be featured in various sectors, providing fo... [more]
