The utterance of “Basel” rolls off the tongue like a whisper. No matter the inflection or language in which it’s spoken, the name of the small city in Switzerland is synonymous with one of the most influential art fairs of the calendar year. For a single week in the middle of June nearly all hotels are booked. The quaint and picturesque city in Northern Switzerland that straddles France and Germany, measuring a mere 9.2 square miles, becomes an international hub where hundreds... [more]

Art fair participants complain, what’s new? But instead of the usual lamentations about hesitant collectors keeping their pocket books closed, this year dealers’ biggest worry was overly aggressive buyers. They just waltzed into a booth, pointed out a work and did not take no for an answer, even if the work had already been sold. This marks the cautious upswing in the art market which has been getting back up on its feet after being hit by the global financial crisis. Although Art Base... [more]

The Dreiländereck (literally, “angle of the three countries”) rises up on the northern end of the Kleinhuningen Port in Basel. It’s a metal pillar, resembling a silver screwed missile, oriented towards the sky and signaling the exact point where three nations—Switzerland, France, Germany—meet together. Basel is a city wedged into the core of Europe; it’s a border town, stuck in the offshoots of Swiss mountains and split in two by an ample bight of the Rhin... [more]

Much more interesting than the description of the 14 Rooms performance series, which will take place as part of Art Basel and is organized by star-curators Klaus Biesenbach and Hans Ulrich Obrist, is its call out for participants/performers to take part in it: “If you have an identical twin, use the opportunity to be part of Damien Hirst’s work. War veterans are sought after for part of Santiago Sierra’s performance, and anyone who speaks colloquial British-English and is similar in appear... [more]

Satellite fairs and art shows seem to be mushrooming around their big brothers. With nearly two-dozen fairs, Miami is definitely the leader, followed by the Armory show, which this year had at least eight side fairs. The month of June though is reserved for the old continent and Art Basel, which is one of the oldest contemporary art fairs and one of the most important when it comes to the concentration of well-established art galleries. Some 4,000 artists will be featured in various sectors, providing for a... [more]

The lights went out for LIGHT BREAKS on Sunday night at Project Art Lounge’s first international exhibition. But as Silvia Sinha, Michele Schuff and Kamila Najbrtová return to work in their studios at home, the positive feedback in Basel continues to pour in. With visitors likening their works to James Turrell and Dan Flavin, these three artists clearly set Atelier Davidseck aglow with their own interpretations of light filled spaces. In two days, nearly 100 visitors engaged the artists in an intense dialogue, e... [more]

On my final day in Basel I would be remiss if I didn't do a little storytelling and share with you what goes on behind the scenes.  Unlike Miami, only a few satellites---SCOPE, Volta, and Liste---attempt to compete with the main Art Basel fair in Basel.  This year was especially challenging fo... Pablo Bronstein, Maria Antoinette and Robespierre Engage In An Irritable Post-Coital Conversation, 2013; Photo by Seanica Howe. Two things have become quite obvious to me on this trip to Basel: 1. I need more wall space and 2.  If I'm going to continue being an art writer, I need to get a very rich boyfriend.  When one's favorite Gerhard Richter at Dominique Levy sells for $25,000,000 before you can even snap a picture, you know that you're in the wrong tax bracket.   Today was the day w... Viewers behold Piotr Uklanski's Untitled (Open Wide), 2012, installation at Art Basel's "Unlimited;" Photo by Seanica Howe. Today was the day I ate my words.  Gagosian, please forgive me.  Hauser & Wirth, keep building.   Every terrible thing I've ever said about oversized galleries with big bank accounts? I take it back.  You are now my reason for being, my everything, because without your support of artists in need of large spaces and big budgets, I would have missed having my jaw drop open... Last weekend I travelled to Basel for a conference. It's been years since I was in Basel, so many years, that my memories of the city are vague, but after twenty-four hours, I remembered where I was. Things tend to stay the same in Switzerland. In the years since I first went to Basel, the world has become a smaller place, Russia has assumed a role as a world power, China has become a leading economic and political force to be reckoned with, the Middle East has become increasingly unstable, global w... Whenever I think about art fairs, the first thing that comes to mind is money. Like how Art Basel can cost a gallery well over $10,000 for a small booth, which means they have to sell at least $20,000 worth of art (based upon a 50/50 split with each artist) just to cover their upfront cost. Still leaving the ungodly debt of crating, shipping, handling, installing, flying, eating, driving, drugging, and stain removals to be paid for. Most of the people who attend won’t buy anything besides an admi... [more]

I Santissimi, Horror Vacui, 2012; Photo by Seanica Howe To say that Art Basel has become significant for our fair city is a bit of an understatement.  Do we even remember what Miami was like before this major event elevated it from vacation destination to cultural hot spot?  Those of us that had never been exposed to million dollar art suddenly became connoisseurs and were granted permission to enter a world we thought only existed in New York and Paris.  Well, the big daddy fair, father... Art Basel 2012

12/20/12 Posted 1/1/13

The 2012 edition of Art Basel in Miami Beach officially closed yesterday, Sunday, December 9. Praised by artists, exhibitors and visitors as Art Basel’s most serious presentation in Miami Beach to date, its galleries across the board reported some great showings. Art Basel may have been the main attraction, but my friends and I found ourselves just as captivated by the vast collection of Art Deco architecture along Collins Avenue. Untitled was particularly interesting, as it was held in a tent... [more]
