Brooklyn-based artist Jacob Williams' day-glo psychedelia already looks like a trip through a Disneyland ride on drugs, which makes Tim Regan's recent video piece (created to announce the opening reception for Williams' solo installation "Nightmare of the Haunted Buddha") a natural fit.
Set to a dramatic Psycho-esque soundtrack, the animation sets Williams' mountains, wild-haired women, and panthers in motion, which nicely establishes... [more]

Installation view, Sean Kennedy: Territory: First Solo Show, courtesy of Thomas Duncan Gallery
Thomas Duncan Gallery presents three installations by Los Angeles-based artist Sean Kennedy during Week 1 of Territory, a five-week exhibition of solo shows from March 19-April 20, 2013. I visited the gallery on the afternoon of the last day of Kennedy's show. Upon entering the unassuming Hollywood space, I worried that I was too late: all of the walls were blank. Soon after, I realized my observa... [more]

Barbara Ash’s recent collection of works challenges stereotypical ideas about women
2/2
"I think it’s depressing that girls are constantly surrounded by messages that are telling them they are not acceptable unless they follow this narrow orthodoxy,” said Barbara Ash, whose sculptures and drawings have strong roots in women’s struggle with the image centric world. “It marginalises the majority and puts a focus on superficial issues rather than in de... This is Craig Norton’s first Solo show in Chicago and he has really impressed the audience with his Mixed Media three dimensional Wall Art.
In Dropping Mom Off at the Old folks Home, Norton draws attention to the insecurities that come with old age. He also highlights the mentality of our society towards old people. We think of them as an outcast and neglect them.
His works are mainly a combination of drawings and collages layered on top of wood cutouts. The work touch the Robert Rauschenberg’s... [more]

The ongoing exhibition of Judith Giechman’s work at the Carrie Secrist Gallery is a series of abstract works in Grayscale. She has taken the paper/canvas on an adventure where she explores the materiality by various mark making techniques, playing with the flow of paints, gestural movements, drips and layering. This depiction of abstraction gives each work a different storyline. Each work can be viewed as a landscape, or composition of figures in space, underwater-world or a science experiment of... [more]

Don’t Fret’s work is carefree and hilarious not only through the characters but also through the texts. It depicts the common life of everyday people that encompasses the issues related to teenage, adulthood, old age, deprived sex-life, relationships, fights, etc. The works flirts with the genres of portrait, figurative and landscape painting (in terms of the setting they are in). Since they depicted scenes are closely related to us we can infer they are our biographies. Unlike Tim Arroyo th... [more]

Bad Behaviour show review
Oct 2012
On the walk from Brixton train station to visit Bad Behaviour, past clothes stalls, car mechanics and food wholesalers which operate underneath the arches – including the wonderfully named ‘Just Yams etc.’ – I wondered how this group exhibition was going to position itself. Would it attempt to engage with the context of Brixton, its independent spirit and history of rebellion and rioting – or was the ‘bad behaviour’ of the title indicative... [more]

I went to the Appropriated Gender opening on Saturday night. So many interesting works of art were spread across three floors, from Kandy Lopez's attitude-filled giant portraits to the thoughtful craft-inspired works of Martin Casuso, an adorable painting ("Kissable") of one of JC Bravo's big-headed cabezones and a latch-hook rug by Kathleen Kranack that will remind you, "It's Your Fault."
Artist Karla Caprali has three works in Appropriated Gender.
I could go on about some of the works, which include sculpture, ins... [more]

ISEA, More Than Just Another Cool Acronym
Written by Katy Crocker // November 8, 2011 // Art, Design // No comments
Ilove acronyms. ISEA is pronounced like a word, which—according to my college Linguistics professor—distinguishes it from initialism, and officially makes it an acronym. Think: idea with an ‘s,’ not I.S.E.A. Here’s another: GOLF, an alleged acronym meaning “gentlemen only ladies, forbidden.” ISEA isn’t an alleged acronym, however; it... [more]

The exhibition begins on Saturday, Feb. 4, and runs through April 28.
516 ARTS Director Suzanne Sbarge says the gallery issued a call for artists for the show last summer and was impressed with how many artists responded.
