Mr. Sun Zongwei was born in Changshu, Jiangsu province in 1912. In 1934, Mr. Sun studied as Xu Beihong’s student. In 1941, Sun Zongwei walked to the west as assistant of Zhang Daqian, joining in the copying and researching work of Dunhuang frescoes.During the war of resistance against aggression, he attended’ Battlefield sketching team’, and drew a lot of sketches and the anti-Japanese posters. Since 1949, he went to sketch in Tianjin, Xingang, etc, joining in the team to describe socialist construction. In 1955, he went to Central Academy of Drama, and established the stage character sketching model and other new teaching modes. From 1957 to the Cultural Revolution, his works reduced day by day with double pressures from politics and his health, slowly faded out from the public view.
Mr. Sun Zongwei was the follower of Xu Beihong’s art theory and practice, was the important assistant of Zhang Daqian in the Dunhuang trip, was the constructor of Chinese stage teaching system, and even was the simple describer of people’s life and social status. In the hundred birthday of Sun Zongwei, we trace and express Sun Zongwei’s art and life by researching, exhibiting and publishing his works.
