The Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize 2013 is open to all photographers over the age of 18 and provides an important platform for portrait photographers of all ages including professionals, gifted amateurs and students. Around 60 photographers will be selected for the exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, and the winner of the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize 2013 will receive £12,000. The exhibition will run at the National Portrait Gallery, London, from 14 November 2013 – 9 February 2014.

For the second consecutive year, the John Kobal New Work Award will be awarded to a photographer under the age of 30 selected for the exhibition. The winning photographer will receive a cash prize of £4000 to include undertaking a commission from the Gallery to photograph a sitter connected with the UK film industry.

Last year the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize, sponsored by international law firm Taylor Wessing, was visited by 65,000 people and attracted 5,340 entries and was won by Jordi Ruiz Cirera for his portrait Margarita Teichroeb. Prizes were also awarded to Jennifer Pattison, Spencer Murphy, Alma Haser and Matthew Niederhauser.

This year’s judging panel includes Sandy Nairne Director, National Portrait Gallery (Chair); Kate Bush Head of Barbican Art Galleries; Suki Dhanda Photographer; Tim Eyles Managing Partner, Taylor Wessing; Terence Pepper Curator of Photographs, National Portrait Gallery; Rebecca Valentine Photographic Agent.

Tim Eyles, Managing Partner of Taylor Wessing, says: ‘As an international law firm with an emphasis on innovation, Taylor Wessing attaches great importance to supporting the creative industries and we are enormously gratified to have such a long-standing relationship with the National Portrait Gallery. Now in its sixth year, the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize continues to inspire by gathering an incredible diversity of entries from photographers of varied nationality, perspective and degrees of experience. The beauty of the Prize for participants is that they don't have to be vastly experienced to enter; previous winners have ranged from gifted amateurs to established professionals. As ever, we encourage anyone with an interest in contemporary portrait photography to enter and eagerly anticipate the resulting exhibition.’

Entry is now open for the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize 2013, the leading international photographic portrait competition, which celebrates and promotes the very best in contemporary portrait photography. The competition is open to everyone aged 18 and over from around the world.

Organised by the National Portrait Gallery in London, the Prize has established a reputation for its diversity of photographic styles submitted by a range of photographers, from gifted amateurs and photography students to established professionals.

In the Prize’s search for excellence, photographers are encouraged to interpret ‘portrait’ in its widest sense of ‘photography concerned with portraying people with an emphasis on their identity as individuals.’
