Hello frends! I am an artist. My roots take place in St.Petersburg, which has great architecture, culture and history that influenced me once and forever. Today, in the times of technical progress, mass production and new artificial materials I search for inspiration in the foundation of the Arts - old Russian Orthodox icons, Renaissance and folk cultures. I seek out look for new shapes and images within my themes using different materials, but my favorite is glass for its plasticit... [more]

Bowie Victims: Confessions from David Bowie Is at the MCA Chicago   Pick-button-5bf6c1b36c3b74ec8f312c7c9f6f1ae3

I’m not sure exactly what Jon Savage meant when he referred to “Bowie victims” in his book about the birth of punk rock, England’s Dreaming, but ever since I read that phrase it stuck with me. In a way I identified with it—being a big David Bowie adherent—and didn’t necessarily consider it as a derogatory term. I figure he meant teens obsessed with Bowie, the young androgynes with their flared high waters and platform boots, teased mullets and green eye mak... [more]

The long stretch of Santa Monica where I once-upon-a-time commuted from a humble craftsman with more roommates than there were rooms to a chi-chi boutique where the diamonds in my charge were given more room to breathe than my fellow tuna-canned bus passengers pressed together in mutually unsatisfactory intimacy. The mood, demeanor, and politics of any given day were, to an extent, influenced by the mode of transportation that morning: bus, bike, lurchy pre-owned vehicle about the same age as m... [more]

Interview with Robert Taite
by
9/22/14 Posted 9/22/14

Winnipeg, Sept. 2014: Robert Taite generates content through painting. Visual data culled through transitions, his paintings seem coy or perhaps indifferent to what Donald Judd described as “specific” in his seminal 1965 essay Specific Objects. While influenced by post war conceptual art, Taite’s own work feels of the moment with a cut-and-paste aesthetic; sources are loose and refreshed often. His practice prompts associations with a continuum of artists playing with architecture... [more]

By Art Is Created That Great Leviathan: Glenn Kaino at Kavi Gupta   Pick-button-5bf6c1b36c3b74ec8f312c7c9f6f1ae3

Glenn Kaino at Kavi Gupta Chicago - Elizabeth Street September 19th - December 20th
Posted 9/18/14

With the opening words “By art is created that great Leviathan,” Thomas Hobbes launches readers into his seminal work of political philosophy, Leviathan, in which he imagines the State as a great aggregation of the masses into a singular societal body. Drawing its title from Hobbes’ treatise, LA-based artist Glenn Kaino’s exhibition at Kavi Gupta Gallery’s Elizabeth Street location indicates an ambition for superstrata-level political commentary. Despite the impossible loftine... [more]

Voynich Manuscript. image via Yale University's Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library We've never done this before. This year we launched our first-ever Curator's Open, where we asked you to use our massive database of art to curate our booth at EXPO Chicago. We then handed over the submissions to an expert jury of curators to decide which show we should put on. They selected Amsterdam-based curator and critic Manus Groenen's show "Cryptographics: a tribute to the Voynich Manuscript." Featurin... [more]

The Middle as a Means to an End: The Chicago Effect at the Hyde Park Art Center   Pick-button-5bf6c1b36c3b74ec8f312c7c9f6f1ae3

In the forward-thinking exhibition The Chicago Effect: Redefining the Middle, curators Allison Peters Quinn, Christopher K. Ho, and Megha Ralapati explore the notion of the Middle, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of the Hyde Park Art Center (the “Center”). Of course, defining the middle is not an easy task. The mere attempt to define “it” and its ubiquity is confusing—but this exact confusion makes the experience of the show all the more intriguing. In the insta... [more]

That Brussels has a thriving art scene is no longer a secret to the international art community. We’ve reached the point where some media have even baptized what was formerly regarded as a dull and grey city as the “New Berlin.” There’s no better moment to check it out with your own eyes than during the seventh edition of Brussels Art Days (BAD), Brussels’ reply to the Gallery Weekend in Berlin you might say. Twenty-nine galleries open their doors next weekend, while o... [more]

Autumn is high season for art and it’s an impossible task to keep up with the Smoke’s endless openings. Best to spread it out and try to see something of everything. The best exhibitions will kick off the season before Frieze takes over in October and demolishes everything artistic in its path. With this in mind, I’ve pulled together a little bit of this and a little bit of that—but basically, it’s all about the Internet. Best exhibition for British Art: MIRRORCITY, the Hayward Gallery ...
