Institutions, history, and Liu Ding's elliptical critique   Pick-button-5bf6c1b36c3b74ec8f312c7c9f6f1ae3

Liu Ding at ANTENNA SPACE March 29th - May 15th
Posted 5/2/14

In his current exhibition, Lake Washington, at Antenna Space in Shanghai, Liu Ding treats the objects of art history with absolute seriousness. To move through Antenna Space’s galleries is to move through time and place, from a lake in the western United States to an image created in Beijing in 1989 but held in an artist’s collection in the same city today. Liu’s associative leaps require reading meaning in ellipses, but it is within these ellipses that the play between history a... [more]

So you may have heard a little story about MoMA’s plans for 2015… and, well, they’re not true. Yes our story about MoMA showing only women artists for the year, in temporary exhibitions and in the permanent collection, was an April Fool’s hoax, published alongside stories about Putin’s new vocation as a painter, Gagosian opening a new location on St. Bart’s and Jemima Kirke quitting the HBO series Girls in order to focus on art. I had to figure out how to move past the obvious statement, which is that the work is frustratingly opaque, and say something about what lies under it. Maybe I could even say something about the opacity itself. The exhibition leaves the gallery nearly empty: about half a dozen objects (depending on how you count them) are strewn throughout. The SoHo columns and worn floorboards of 38 Greene Street are... [more]

As the various flavours of institutional critique have now become “institutionalised” as part of the practice of contemporary artists, One Step Forward, Two Steps Back curated by Biljana Ciric at the Guangdong Times Museum in Guangzhou aims to reassess the origins, methodologies and effects of this practice. It can be said that One Step Forward… builds on the work of the curatorial team within the Times Museum (and those of its invited curators) since its formal opening in 2009. Th... [more]
