Hello frends! I am an artist. My roots take place in St.Petersburg, which has great architecture, culture and history that influenced me once and forever. Today, in the times of technical progress, mass production and new artificial materials I search for inspiration in the foundation of the Arts - old Russian Orthodox icons, Renaissance and folk cultures. I seek out look for new shapes and images within my themes using different materials, but my favorite is glass for its plasticit... [more]

Middle East-centric shows are having a moment in American museums, but the Middle East, North Africa, and Mediterranean (MENAM) focus at this year’s Armory Show (March 4-8) will mark the first time a fair in the US has brought a large showing of art from the region to a commercial environment. Curator Omar Kholeif and focus partners Edge of Arabia and Art Jameel have selected a handful of galleries, each of which will feature a maximum of two artists, balanced between modern and contemporary. The overall curatorial vision for the s... [more]

Is Anyone's Art "Original"?

I apply oil onto canvas using unusual tools for application. I also try to use imagery that is illrelevent except for the impression it leaves the viewer. Purists want Societies Approval before attempting to communicate in a time-binding manner with the Future Generations that have No Future. I want My imagery to continue to effect social change and solidify My Position of Living in This Constant State of Deterioration of Our Most Sacred Vows. #1 Thou Shall Not Kill #2 Thou Shall Not Steal #3 Tho... Language Explored in Kathryn Arnold’s Solo Show By Melissa McKenzie http://www.santaclaraweekly.com/2015/Issue-8/language_explored_in_kathryn_arnolds_solo_show.html If someone is characterized as “short,” “chipper” or “stubborn,” it will immediately implant an image about the person being described. Although not often contemplated, there are strong implications associated with language. And, despite there being no standard of what the line is for “s... [more]

About eight years ago, before J.Crew arrived in Toronto, I was having a conversation with a colleague at the University of Toronto. He was an Art History PhD from Ohio, who specialized in medieval Italian church frescoes and dressed like the quintessential preppy yuppie: buttoned-down gingham cotton shirts, khaki pants, Clarks. He complained about how he couldn’t shop in Toronto, because it hadn’t yet caught up with “civilization” by having a J.Crew. Recently, I found myself wander... [more]

Between 1942 and 1963 Dorothy Canning Miller was the curator of the highly perceptive and ultimately influential Americans shows at the Museum of Modern Art. Beginning with Americans 1942: 18 Artists From 9 States and ending with Americans 1963, Miller presented the work of artists such as Hyman Bloom, Robert Motherwell, Jay DeFeo, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Lee Bontecou, and Frank Stella—artists who would ultimately be the defining contributors to the mid-century American art his... Michael Goldberg's Final Mark
by
2/14/15 Posted 2/15/15

Michael Goldberg was in his fifties when the graffiti movement blanketed New York City in the 1980s. A 'second-generation' abstract expressionist, lifetime professor and Lower East Side resident at the time, he found himself smack in the midst of intense cultural upheaval, drawing itself out by the young and disenfranchised, directly onto the pavement and subway cars.He absorbed it right into his palette. This work is currently on-view at Michael Rosenfeld Gallery in an exhibition of paintings and w... [more]

Digital Ice Cream

Sometimes selling art is like selling a new flavor of ice cream. In general people like ice cream and will gravitate to the standards. Vanilla and Chocolate,Chocolate chip these are the basics like the still lifes and landscapes of art. The flavor is sweet and reliably good. It is also easy to discern a good chocolate from a bad, just like a good still life is clearly identifiable verses an unsighlty or poorly excecuted one. As a classically trained Artist, at the Pennsylvania Academy of the... [more]

Artist As Mother

RUTH CHASE The hardest part of motherhood was that everything that makes me an artist, making motherhood that much harder for me. My daughter started off colicky, never wanting to go to anyone else. She constantly was nursing to soothe herself, and only wanted to be on me, without stimulation whatsoever from the outside world. This lasted for 4 years. During this time I felt isolated, confused, and completely out of my league being her mother. It took many years, books, and couches to figure... [more]
