Right now, my favorite London-based fashion blogger, Susie Bubble, is on holiday in Santa Monica. “Is it Blackpool? Great Yarmouth? No it's Santa Monica,” she writes. Right now, my best friend’s plane takes off from Burbank’s Bob Hope Airport en route to Poland by way of Israel. Right now, Lana Del Rey’s “Summertime Sadness” repeats in my ear buds. Right now, I’m writing from a balcony overlooking a rocky jetty in the Pacific Ocean where on July... [more]

James B. Clover at Yeelen Gallery There is actual art out there within the walls of Miami’s white cubes and there is a strong possibility that it will make you feel something other than a hang-over. Florian Maier-Aichen at 303 Gallery June 5th - August 1st
Posted 7/22/14

Florian Maier-Aichen’s recent show at 303 Gallery—his fourth to date—splits into two distinct sets of photographs. One series is landscape oriented; the other is markedly abstract. Almost all of the photographs are printed on a large scale, the average size being roughly equivalent to the face of a vending machine. This may be the primary characteristic of these works; because they are large—and from a distance appear full of detail—one is naturally compelled to look... [more]

Spencer and Dana Rogers, the dynamic duo of creative portrait photography in the South Loop, have refurbed their extensive Printer's Row studio space into a contemporary yet comfortably labyrinthine visual art gallery. This past Friday (June 6th), Spencer christened the new space with 20 spatially demanding and visually vibrant works in oil and acrylic for the exhibition, "Abstractions." The complex, layered works range in color from sunset reds and oranges to warm and playful fuschias to el... [more]

Chayo Frank at Guccivuitton June 28th - August 9th
Posted 7/17/14

As I left for the infamous Amertec building in Hialeah—a twenty-minute drive from Miami—worrying about the coming rain, a friend warned me: “Check first, the weather’s different there.” Designed by Chayo Frank in 1969, when he was fresh out of the University of Oklahoma’s College of Architecture, the building is a curvy, organelle-shaped, surreally tropical structure. Depending on one’s perspective, it’s a futurist masterpiece or bizarre opus, a work of u... [more]

Elizabeth Hoeveler (ASC) commenting Immo Jalass's artworks How many dimensions can we see? Three, on a 'normal day. On a 'normal' day, however, I might be fooled into thinking I'm somewhere else - or many other places at the same time, while looking at Immo Jalass's digital offerings. I can cross dimensions and have a foot in several. I can extend the one dimension I'm in and reshape it to my wish. I can focus on a fruit color and have that color move back or forward out of the fruit bowl. Immo Jala... [more]

Watchlist Artist: Caroline Jane Harris

Caroline Jane Harris at Scream 7/9/14 Posted 7/9/14

Scream are proud to present the first solo exhibition by young British artist Caroline Jane Harris. The artist explores the complexities of nature through a labour-intensive paper-cutting technique. Harris is inspired by the natural world and is conscious of the strong yet subtle links between natural life forms and us. She explores the intricacy and beauty of nature, which echo human and man-made systems, by responding to visual phenomena such as geometric, linear and circular motifs found in a... [more]
