Here are his choices: 1) helen baribeau 2) nils henrik sundquist 3) dave d'orio 4) drew storm graham 5) kelly guerrero 6) zofie lang 7) justin cameron 8) matt macintire 9) sean hennessey 10) melissa burley ...

Vintage photo friday
Los Angeles, 1943My cousin Marilyn was the first grandchild born to our grandparents, Sam and Freda. Here is toddler Marilyn, age 3. Her mother, Mae is holding her. Aunt Celia is on the left and Aunt Roz is directly behind Marilyn. Since Marilyn was the first grandchild, she was photographed quite a bit. Here she is in her World War II WAC uniform.I know this photo was taken in Los Angeles, probably at Marilyn's parents' house near Sunset Plaza.I just LOVE the hair styles on those three sisters!...

"a museum, reborn, remains true to its old self, only better"
Another one I couldn't resist linking to. Roberta Smith on the new Barnes:"[Barnes's] quirky institution is suddenly on the verge of becoming the prominent and influential national treasure that it has long deserved to be. It is also positioned to make an important contribution to the way we look at and think about art."But ... but ... but .. THEFT!!! TRAGEDY!! Dawid krępski & jason chiu – fall into light
Fall into Light (2012, 209MB, 3:57 min) For about the first twenty seconds I didn’t think I was going to like this music video by Dawid Krępski & Jason Chiu, or at least that I would remain easily indifferent and unmoved. Then, ..well.. , it’s a slow burn but it gently explodes, if that’s not too much of an oxymoron, into something fertile and strange that won’t let go of you. I don’t think there probably is a narrative but, as you watch, the piece fools you into believing there is, one...

Comment sketches from the art of video games
Visitors's sketches from The Art of Video Games comment books The Art of Video Games exhibition includes a lot of interactive technology, but one of our favorite components is not hi-tech at all; it's a plain spiral-bound notebook that asks visitors to leave a comment. We include a comment book in every show that we do, and we read all of them. This exhibition has inspired a lot of comments: we've filled 12 books in just 2 months so far! Gamers are a creative bunch, too, and many of the pages are filled with sketches and doodles o...

Tom sachs, space program: mars, park avenue armory, may 16 - june 17, 2012
Tom Sachs Space Program: Mars Park Avenue Armory 66th Street and Park Avenue produced by the Armory and Creative Time May 16 - June 17, 2012 May 16, 2012. It must be a daunting task for any artist to consider placing a body of work into a huge, cavernous void such as the Park Avenue Armory. How to fill the 55,000 square foot Drill Hall, with its high vaulted ceilings and acres of plank floor, in addition to the ornate, memorabilia filled, wood paneled corridors and regimental meeting rooms, and...

Kaws @ perrotin hong kong
“The Nature of Need”, solo show of American neo-pop artist Brian Donnely, a.k.a. KAWS, started this week @ Emmanuel Perrotin‘s brand new Hong Kong space. KAWS, who has a background in graffiti, has gone a long way: his 2010 solo “Pay the Debt to Nature“ @ Perrotin’s Paris gallery sold out already during the opening and besides being a respected artist, he’s also a celebrated product designer (if you don’t have one of his toy figures already, you should consider ;-)). For The Nature of Need he created new series of paintings that use cropping of the pictorial spac...

The last paintings of cy twombly
Cy TwomblyGagosian Gallery - Beverly HillsThrough June 9, 2012Re-posted from Artslant.comCy Twombly, it's been my experience, was always at a distance. Most of his life, he lived across the world in whitewashed ancient cities. I never met the man, but all accounts point to a dignified august presence. To me, he’s a fantasy of a Roman poet with a bearing full of nature and wind but also philosophy and silence. His paintings, at least institutionally, have at the moment a certified “you have to like...

As the election year heats up: a few thoughts on our noisy, noisy democracy
A comedian told a joke once about how so often, when he paused to reflect on his life thus far, he realized what a jerk he had been about five years ago. After doing this several times over the course of a few decades (realizing that five years prior he had been quite the jerk), it finally dawned on him that he's more than likely being quite the jerk right now. That's why older people tend to be more quiet, he said. They've figured this out.I think of that joke every time I catch myself in a po...

Snap-happy: interns’ photo spree around the walker
What happens when you give a trio of Walker interns some new snazzy cameras and tell them to spend the day photographing? Last week, Ashley Monk, Chyna Bounds and I got to test-drive the new Pentax K-01 camera designed by Marc Newson, which just got stocked at Walker shop. After assembling the cameras, charging the batteries, and giving the manual/cheat sheet a quick read, we were ready for adventure. We soon gave up on the instructions and opted for hands-on learning – this camera is t...

An open environment
I’d like to use this post to talk about Momenta Gallery, located on Bogart Street in Bushwick. April 25th marked Momenta’s Spring Benefit Raffle, which featured 200 works on display for silent auction. Gallery Director Andy Monk described how the benefit functions differently than a typical silent auction: tickets start at $200, wi...

"who's afraid of accumulation?" (part 2)
Part 2 of Dr. Philip Ursprung's guest essay on Thomas Hirschhorn's Swiss-Swiss Democracy: What was the exhibition about? Hirschhorn “besieged” – as he put it – the Cultural Center during 50 days. He was present during most of the exhibitions time. He transformed it into an environment of knowledge. The walls were decorated with the “democratic” colors pale red, pale blue and pale yellow. Some walls were covered with texts, newspaper clippings, and photographs. A miniature landscape...

People i knew without the gelatin
“The deceased, as you know, have the inconvenient habit of cooling off too slowly; they’re burning hot. So they are turned into aspics by pouring memories over them–the best form of gelatin. And since deceased greats are also too large, they are cut down. The nose, say, is served separately, or the tongue. You need less gelatin that way. And that’s how you get yesterday’s classic as freshly cooked tongue in aspic. With a side dish of hoofs, from the horse he used to ride. I’m trying...

Art is not the evening news
I may have told this story here before, but I always figure if I can't remember, probably neither can anyone else.Shortly after 9/11/2001, about two weeks in fact, an artist came into our new space with a proposal for a group show of work responding to the terrorist attacks. I didn't know this artist. She was simply shopping around for a venue for what I assume she thought would be snapped up as a timely exhibition. We were in the market for group exhibitions at that time, having just opened, b...

Rest in peace steve jobs
"Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being," Mr. Cook said in a letter to employees. "We will honor his memory by dedicating ourselves to continuing the work he loved so much."During his more than three-decade career, Mr. Jobs transformed Silicon Valley as he helped turn the once-sleepy expanse of fruit orchards into the technology industry's innovation center. In addition to laying the groundwork for the industry alongside others like Microsoft Corp. co-founder Bill Gates, Mr. Jobs prove...

Lisa Yuskavage Triptych 2011 Oil on linen Each: 77 1/4 x 70 1/8 inches (196.2 x 178.1 x 3.8 cm) YUSLI0395 Why go any deeper when the surface is so pleasing? That's what I asked a skeptic at the opening for Lisa Yuskavage's long awaited exhibition at David Zwirner. I love everything about this painter and her work; the subject matter, the landscape, the art historical references, the palette of colors, the technique of ephemeral-like painting. Indeed she creates a world of heavenly delights. The fact that some of...

I have been to Bern, Switzerland the past three summers for the Sommerakademie at the Zentrum Paul Klee, an intensive two-week residency for artists, curators, writers, academics and all of the above—“art people” as it were.
