Looking at a Kevin Sonmor painting is like listening to opera with one’s eyes.
Sonmor presents his viewers with a broiling sea of emotive painterliness, filtered through the lens of art history. As a result, these paintings are at once wholly contemporary and deeply rooted in the myth and legend of ages past. The two lead actors on the stage of these works are a dramatic expression of light, and the powerful physicality of the substance of paint. Watching the drama play out in each piece is a singular experience.
Sonmor works with a visual vocabulary reminiscent of Dutch 17th Still Life (Jan Steen’s perishable flowers and grapes), the Romantic German landscapes from the 19th century (atmospheric, dense, moody, heroic), the strong chiaroscuro ever present in works by Caravaggio and early Rubens, the rich topography and lighting effects of a Rembrandt surface. Almost in defiance of logic, his seemingly contradictory applications of paint coalesce into convincing formal elements: earthy terrain, rocks, vegetation and bodies of water.
Born in Lacombe, Alberta in 1959, Kevin Sonmor received his Masters of Fine Arts from Concordia University, Montreal. His paintings have been widely exhibited internationally in both solo and group exhibitions. Kevin Sonmor is a recipient of numerous international grants and awards, and his work may be found in many private and public collections. Sonmor has been living and working in Montreal for the past twelve years. This is his second solo exhibition in Chicago.
