Sister Mary Corita Kent’s work explores the influence of our cultural surroundings on our consciousness as Americans in an era of progress and change. According to ExhibitsUSA, “A Catholic convent and college in Los Angeles might seem an unlikely breeding ground for Pop Art and social commentary. However, for nearly three decades, Sister Mary Corita—a Catholic nun, teacher, and inspiration to such luminaries as Buckminster Fuller and Charles Eames—devoted her life to creating cutting-edge serigraphs (silk screens).” These remarkable serigraphs have found their way into homes and galleries across America as silent testaments to the power of peaceful activism in pursuit of personal and civic empowerment and progress. She explores these themes by incorporating elements of the popular culture that surrounds us as raw material for her work, including song lyrics and advertising slogans, among many contributing influences. |
