Recognized by many as the greatest 20th-century American sculptor, David Smith (1906-1965) was also a painter and draftsman, producing a wealth of work on paper both as studies for sculpture and as independent creations. His centennial exhibition organized by the Guggenheim Museum, New York in 2006, traveled to the Pompidou Center, Paris and the Tate Modern, London. Upcoming exhibitions featuring works on paper are scheduled for IVAM, Valencia, Spain (2010), the Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C. (2010) and the Los Angeles County Museum (2011). This is his first gallery exhibition in Chicago since 1975. |
