Northern Illinois University Art Museum presents “The Life and Art of Käthe Kollwitz” a lecture by Eva-Maria Worthington, Director, The Worthington Gallery, Chicago, Saturday April 18^th, 2:30 p.m., Altgeld Hall room 315.

Eva-Maria Worthington, an art historian, founded the Worthington Gallery Chicago, in 1970. The Worthington Gallery specializes in German Expressionism including Blaue Reiter and Neue Sachlichkeit work, The Bauhaus, as well as contemporary painters and sculptors. Eva-Maria has curated many exhibitions including ten featuring the art of Käthe Kollwitz. She will share insights into the life and work of Käthe Kollwitz and other German artists of the early 20^th century; a time when Germany was in great turmoil before, during and after the two world wars.

Käthe Kollwitz (1867 – 1945) is recognized as one of the premier artists of the early twentieth century. She is known primarily for her emphasis on the social content of her work, but this often overshadows her technical and artistic mastery. The current exhibition at the NIU Art Museum: Käthe Kollwitz: Images of Death and Life, is a selection of original etchings, woodcuts and lithographs that span her long career and showcase her unmistakable graphic style, empathic humanity and mordant social commentary.
