The E|C Gallery is very pleased to be bringing Japanese artist Ken’ichiro Taniguchi and his unique sculptures to Chicago.  Please join us for the exciting opening of this new solo exhibition, Hecomi Study #24, on Friday, September 7th from 6-8pm.

Taniguchi’s new sculptures will be on display at the E|C Gallery from September 7th through October 6th, 2012.

The sculptor Ken’ichiro Taniguchi bases each of his works on various individual “Hecomi”.
A “Hecomi” is Japanese, meaning a peeled spot, dent, depression, crack etc. Taniguchi searches out and meticulously traces these dents and broken parts of roads or wall surfaces.

The collection of cracks and dents is a set of visual disturbances of the system our urban surroundings are made of. These shapes and patterns are flaws that most people either want to erase or ignore. But instead of ignoring them, Taniguchi transforms them into beautiful, lively sculptures.

Through the work of Taniguchi, they are no longer mere interruptions of a larger structure, but a structure in itself worthy of identity and character.

For his first solo show in The United States, Taniguchi included his largest sculpture, measuring 1080cm x 480cm (opened size) and also “Hecomi Map” which was made and published in Hamburg, Rotterdam and Berlin.

Ken’ichiro Taniguchi (b. 1976 in Sapporo, Japan) lives and works in Berlin, Germany and Japan. He received his BFA from the The College of Fine Art in Hokkaido in 2000.
Taniguchi most recent project include Hecomi Study for CJIB (Centraal Justitieel Incasso Bureau), Leeuwarden in New building of CJIB, Leeuwarden, The Netherlands. His work has previously been exhibited at venues in Europe and Asia including N2 GALERIA, Barcelona, Spain; PHOEBUS in Rotterdam; Kik, Meppel,  The Netherlands; Souterrain in Berlin, AD&A gallery in Japan, and Mikiko Sato Gallery in Hamburg.
Taniguchi has been featured in publications such as Art Forum, Kunstbeeld Rotterdam and Art-Das Kunstmagazin.
