Anatomy in the Gallery at the International Museum of Surgical Science presents two new exhibitions of medically inspired contemporary art—

Julia Klein: Joint Work & Alison Petty Ragguette: Visceralab

September 9 through November 18, 2011

Free opening reception for the artists: Friday, September 9, from 5 to 8 pm; entire museum open for viewing

These exhibitions, the latest in the Museum’s ongoing Anatomy in the Gallery program, constitute studies in biomaterials and biomechanics—experiments in the fabrication of synthetic bodily systems. 

Joint Work consists of articulated line-centric sculptures created from segments of wood bound together with orthopedic casting tape.

Visceralab comprises a tangled network of bare porcelain vessels resembling mutant plumbing fixtures and automotive parts, linked by translucent silicone rubber tubes interwoven with bright silk threads through which colored liquid circulates.

Anatomy in the Gallery at IMSS has showcased rotating exhibitions of medically inspired contemporary art within the context of the Museum’s historical exhibits and artifacts since 1998.
