HungryMan Gallery Chicago presents, Ruins, an
exhibition of works by Daniel G. Baird and
paintings by Russell Leng.

Ruins examines the artist’s practice as an
exploration of civilization. Through expedition
and inquiry, man has long studied the world
around him and the worlds that came before
him. Creating a context for the present and a
vision for the future has always been a
preoccupation of mankind. Through these
journeys, artifacts are discovered and stories
are told. Oftentimes these stories tell of the
destruction of past cultures and the undeniable
desolation of mankind in an ever expanding
universe.

The resulting body of work reflects both past
destruction and future possibilities through the
act of discovery. Baird creates sculpture based
on scientific history that invokes a somewhat
child-like application. He uses video to reflect
the inherent juxtaposition of destruction and
hope in man’s ongoing exploration of the world
around him. Leng employs the materiality of
paint to create relics from an imagined
landscape. These glimpses into future
environments aim to confront the viewer’s
perception and their understanding of
landscape from within the painting tradition.
