As part of the compo ser series at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago\, the celebrate d Chicago-based chamber music ensemble\, eighth blackbird\,  returns to the MCA Stage. The concerts will feature new works by two young\ , New York-based\, composer/performers who bridge the worlds of classical m usic and rock: Nico Muhly and Bryce Dessner. Muhly who worked extens ively with Philip Glass early in his career has also composed full-length a lbums\, film scores\, symphony and theater commissions\, and collaborated w ith many notable musicians such as: Björk\, Grizzly Bear\, and Sufjan Steve ns. Dessner is the guitarist of the indie rock band The National\, co-found er of the contemporary classical ensemble Clogs\, and curates the MusicNOW Festival in Cincinnati. Muhly and Dessner perform with eighth blackbird and play their own music as well as music by composers who have inspired them. MCA Stage co-commissioned Dessner’s new work for eighth blackbird.

Jennet Thomas (bo rn 1963) is an artist who makes films\, performances and installations. Her work began as spoken word and projections for a live audience\, it now com bines a variety of filmic languages\, ranging from soap opera to experiment al and underground filmmaking\, from sci-fi to musicals. Her work tackles v ery human content and is often bleakly comic. Thomas' work emerged from the anarchistic\, experimental culture of London's underground film and live a rt club scene in the 1990's\, where she was a co-founder of the Exploding C inema Collective. Her numerous film works have screened extensively in the international Film Festival arena (Rotterdam\, Oberhausen\, New York Underg round Film Festival) with retrospectives at The Pleasure Dome\, Toronto\, A nthology Film Archives\, New York and Rencontres Video Art Plastique in Fra nce. She is a Senior Lecturer on BA Fine Art: Print and Time Based Media at the University of the Arts London\, Wimbledon College.

At First Fridays\, visitors can unwind after work and enjoy an intriguing mix of culture\, ranging from live music and perfo rmance art to experimental films and hands-on art stations. May’s fiesta th emed event includes spins by DJ Alvin Black\, a GlitterGuts p hoto booth\, an on-site give-away by WXRT radio station\, and a crea tion station with Chicago artist Gabriel Garcia.  Visitors can enjoy a Loteria game and participate in a scavenger hunt with a ch ance to win prizes. First Fridays tickets\, which include museum adm ission\, live entertainment\, and complimentary Wolfgang Puck hors d ’oeurves\, are $18 ($14 in advance). Guests must be 21 or older.

The tale of Hansel and Gretal in L’Illusion Théâtre de marionettes: Under the Stars is presented by the Chicago Humanities Festival (CHF) with the MCA Stage. Based on the original German story collected by the Broth ers Grimm\, À la belle étoile (Under the Stars) is an updated adaption of the relationship between brother and sister. With origi nal music and a simple set design\, the fears and joys of the two young cha racters are heightened by unique lighting effects. Under the Stars\, with an intimate sense of scale\, empl oys the fable’s original themes of poverty\, fear\, imagination\, and chang e to shed a new light on a familiar tale. The performance is recommended fo r ages 6+ and the running time is 60 minutes.

Stages\, Sights\, &am p\; Sounds is an annual global performance festival for children and famili es that is part of Chicago Humanities Festival\, a foundation which organiz es an annual series of lectures\, concerts\, and films in Chicago. The fest ival’s theme this year is fairy tales\, and six companies from around the w orld are performing classic and re-imagined versions to delight children an d adults alike. The festival runs May 7–19\, 2013\, at various venues in Ch icago.

The Chicago Humanities Festival with the MCA Stage presents Stages\, Sights and Sounds: Paige Hernande z: Paige in Full\, the sibling duo\, Paige Hernandez (performer/choreog rapher) and Nick the 1da (hip hop artist). Paige in Full is a n innovative fusion of poetry\, hip-hop\, dance\, and educati on that follows a young girl with a mixed-race identity and her unique 21st Century not-so-fairy-tale search for acceptance\, meaning and t rue love. The memories\, dreams\, young parenthood\, and the pull of the st reets are based on the artists’ own experiences. Hernandez shares stories a nd implements urban dance while her brother mixes beats behind her. Footage of swirling images of galaxies and silhouettes of animated figures and pro jections from filmmaker and animator\, Tewodross Melchishua\, are al so featured. Recommended for ages 12+. Running time is 60 minutes.
