This exhibition examines a ser ies of important issues and effects of war not commonly addressed by the ne ws or arts media including: post-traumatic stress\; service by gays in the military/don’t ask don’t tell\; gender issues\; what constitutes maleness i n war and the long term effects of loss of a child on family. The conflicts are primarily in Iraq and Afghanistan but the issues are universal.

Presented are six projects by four accomplished and award-winni ng photographers\, two men and two women: Samantha  Appleton\, Vincent C ianni\, Ashley Gilbertson\, and Stephanie  Sinclair. Select important h istoric war photographs by Dmitri Baltermants\, Robert Capa\, Werner Bischo f\, Wayne Miller\, and others will also be exhibited to provide

a c ontext for the current conflicts.

Samantha Ap pleton examines the maleness of the atmosphere of war.

\n

She photographed men and boys\, soldiers and civilians\, as they mov e through the

\n

fog of war.

\n

Vincent Cianni shares works from his ongoing project\, “Gays in the Mil itary: How America Thanked Me”.  This oral history and photographic project documents gay and lesbian service members and veterans from World War II t o the present and is based on their experiences in the military and the eff ects that the ban on homosexuality had on

\n

their care ers and lives.

\n

Ashley Gilbertson goes to the heart of the matter with a quiet homage to the soldiers who will never come home in his “Bedrooms of the Fallen”.   Also on view are photographs from< i>  his book\, WHISKEY TANGO FOXTROT (The University of Chicago 2007) w hich documents four years of his experiences in Iraq.

Stephanie Sinclair creates compassionate art reporta ge out of almost indescribable pain.  Her photographs in this exhibition ce nter on the suffering of the women of Afghanistan.  Her subjects have been the victims of such pernicious and continual violence at the hands of men t hat they have taken to acts of self-immolation.
