Sultana Raza’s ‘Fallen Angels’ at Art Monaco

Sultana Raza is pleased to be exhibiting at the Grimaldi Forum at Art Monaco, specially as the artists and gallerists have come from all over the world.

‘It’s exciting to be in such a cosmopolitan setting, with such a vast variety of art-works from all over the world,’ said Sultana.

On display is her art-work, Fallen Angels, which deals with the current ecological crisis.

In Fallen Angels, as two figures disperse while they fall, the questions being asked through this art-work are whether we’re falling towards a desert landscape or can we rise towards a sustainable future? Since Art Monaco is encouraging artists to explore ecological concerns, Fallen Angels is specially relevant to Art Monaco.

Fallen Angels is from her ‘Dispersion’ series. The other issue touched upon via this art-work is the dispersion of cultural identity. As cultures meld, and individuals travel all over the globe, carrying their language, and culture with them, they lose a part of their identity, whilst assimilating new concepts and ways of living.

With rapid technological changes, are we losing too many parts of ourselves without even realizing it? Many skills related to hand-making artefacts, and even the minor languages are being lost. Not to mention certain plant and animal species. What loss does this mean to humanity as a whole? Will we realise that only after it’s too late?

A good point is illustrated in H.G. Wells’ novelThe War of the Worlds,’ where the invading Martians are vanquished by bacteria. What if we destroy a significant species of bacteria that is holding other more damaging bacteria in check? Upsetting the balance of Nature can have grave consequences, which we don’t seem to have realized yet.

However, in the middle of Fallen Angels, there’s a green heart, signifying hope, and the fact the Earth will always be green.
