EXPO CHICAGO, The International Exposition of Contemporary and Modern Art announces two unique prizes in support of Chicago’s art community. Artadia: The Fund for Art and Dialogue will award one Chicago-based artist with a monetary prize in support and encouragement of their work with the Artadia/EXPO CHICAGO Award. Additionally, the Andree Stone Emerging Artist Prize will fund the purchase of an artwork by an emerging artist to be gifted to the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (MCA). Both prizes will be awarded at separate press conferences during EXPO CHICAGO (Sept. 19-22) at Navy Pier’s Festival Hall.
“We are extremely honored that both Artadia and the family of the late Andree Stone chose to present these new awards during EXPO CHICAGO,” said President and Director of EXPO CHICAGO Tony Karman. “It is through their generosity and vision that we too are able to further our commitment to the local arts community, and I am confident that these awards will have a lasting impact.”
Renewing their partnership with EXPO CHICAGO for the second year, Artadia: The Fund for Art and Dialogue will present the Artadia/EXPO CHICAGO Award, a new prize awarded to one Chicago-based artist during the fair. Artists with work on display by EXPO CHICAGO exhibitors will be eligible, and the award will be chosen by an esteemed panel of jurors, led by Nora Burnett Abrams, Associate Curator of The Museum of Contemporary Art Denver. The winner of the EXPO CHICAGO/Artadia Prize will join the Artadia family and receive all lifetime privileges of the Artadia awardees. This includes access to Artadia's national network, the option to participate in Artadia programs such as its New York Residency program, publications and exhibitions program, professional services and promotion in all Artadia materials.
“Artadia provides support for artists at pivotal stages in their careers,” said Artadia Founder and President Christopher E. Vroom. “We are reflecting our mission to fuel local art communities by creating this new award, and EXPO CHICAGO is the ideal venue for this presentation.”
Artadia has long-standing, close relationships with foundations and private patrons of the arts who recognize the importance of unrestricted funding to visual artists at the local and national levels. At EXPO CHICAGO, Artadia will have a booth featuring editions for purchase by Josef Strau, Phoebe Washburn, Frank Benson, Catherine Wagner and Ian Tweedy. The sale of these artworks supports Artadia’s programming.
The Andree Stone Emerging Artist Prize honors the late Andree Stone, longtime gallerist, art appraiser and enthusiastic supporter of the Chicago arts community and Chicago artists, whose dedication will be reflected through this purchase prize. An outstanding artwork by emerging talent on view at EXPO CHICAGO will be chosen by an appointed selection committee of notable collectors and MCA curators and purchased with funds from the recently established Andree Stone Emerging Artist Prize. The artwork will then be presented as a gift to the Museum of Contemporary Art at a press conference Saturday, September 21, 2013, where the MCA’s James W. Alsdorf Chief Curator Michael Darling will accept the acquisition on behalf of the museum.
“We are grateful for the opportunity to grow our collection, which is even more meaningful when it is associated with Andree Stone who was such a longtime supporter of art in Chicago,” said Darling. “This new acquisition will further expand Andree’s imprint on the community and will leave behind a great artwork that generations to come will enjoy.”
