Group Show at Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) November 14th - February 14th, 2010
Posted 11/21/09

“Italics: Italian Art Between Tradition and Revolution 1968-2008” sheds light on nearly a half century of contemporary art not otherwise seen outside of Italy.  The brainchild of international curator, writer and critic, Francesco Bonami, and co-presented by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago and the Palazzo Grassi in Venice, the exhibition gives new insight to the conventional definition of “Italian Art”.  On view through, February 14, 2010, “Italics” includes more than... Alex Olson, Lisa Williamson at Shane Campbell Gallery November 14th - January 9th, 2010
Posted 11/16/09

In Alex Olson’s and Lisa Williamson’s first show at Shane Campbell Gallery they find in each other an interesting analog. Alex Olson’s paintings reference different forms of written text like announcements, editorials, or shorthand writing. Their pictorial flatness emphasizes their texture over an optic space and nods to the paintings’ source material. However, these references appear to be really just a way to organize shapes on a two-dimensional surface, to give it a reason to... [more]

Wesley Kimler at Eyeporium Gallery October 2nd 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM
Posted 11/1/09

Umurbrogol?  I hate to admit that the title of Wesley Kimler’s latest exhibition was somewhat foreign to me until his opening.  After a quick search on Wikipedia and brief history lesson from the artist, I had a better understanding behind the series. Currently on view at the Eyeporium Gallery, “Umurbrogol” is named after the treacherous mountain range on the island of Peleliu (part of the Palau Islands).   This particular location was the site of one the most devastating WWII b... Andrea S. Harris at Homey Gallery October 3rd - October 26th
Posted 10/1/09

...you have to see Andrea Harris's work.  I have watched Andrea and this show develop over the past several years.  We are studio mates.  Her art completely reflects her belief in the connection between nature and us humans as well as between nature and art.  This show is beautiful and you should not miss it. James Kao at Lloyd Dobler Gallery September 12th 6:00 PM - 10:00 PM
Posted 9/28/09

Located above the historic Chopin Theatre on West Division, Lloyd Dobler Gallery kicked off the fall season with vibrant new paintings from philosopher turned artist, James Kao. “Ways of World Making” features work from his latest series “Pantomimes”. Kao’s paintings represent the root of the title, “Pantomimes”, meaning a group that imitates all. Taking cues from the aesthetic philosophies of Nelsen Goodman and the artist’s own, Kao builds a world based on surrou... [more]

Group Exhibition at The Art Institute of Chicago July 11th - September 20th
Posted 9/14/09

On view until September 20, the Art Institute's impressive and wide-ranging exhibition, "A Case for Wine: From King Tut to Today," is interesting not only for its plethora of drinking artifacts but for what it says about the history of human interaction with alcohol.  What is clear is the dissolute nature of man and woman in regards to drink over the ages. From an ancient Greek terracotta bowl decorated with men reveling in Bacchic frivolity to an English silvered brass wine ci... [more]

Whose_pie_is_better Portrait of the Artist: Candice Hunter

Candace Hunter at An Orange Moon Antiques & Design Studio August 28th 5:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Posted 9/11/09

Originally appeared in Newcity, 8/24/09.  Written by Jason Foumberg, Art Editor for Newcity.  Courtesy of Newcity and Jason Foumberg: Candace Hunter An artist working in collage can make one of two major statements: by selecting and cutting material from piles of old magazines, the collagist either despairingly critiques the ever-flowing fountain of consumer information, or else she is a cosmopolite, joining disparate faces and places into a communal frame. Candace Hunter is this second type of colla... [more]

at Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) July 21st - October 18th
Posted 9/7/09

Built upon the holdings in the Museum of Contemporary Art’s (MCA) permanent collection and augmented by loans from galleries and collectors, “Constellations,” curated by Julie Rodrigues Widholm, organizes the practice of painting into a series of themes. Rather than a historical lineage approach, although that can still be read in the groupings, the show places artists together based on concept or working method. There is a lot of good work in the show and a lot of old favorites. B... [more]

Personal histories and biographical information often add depth and interest to exhibitions.  Museums in particular are able to devote space, energy and research to providing historical and personal background information on both the artist as an individual, as well as the environment within which a particular artist is working. In the case of outsider art, where life and art are usually closely linked, there is a strong argument for the importance  of the biography of the artis... [more]

at Zolla/Lieberman Gallery June 19th - August 20th
Posted 8/10/09

The phrase “anything goes” appears to be the theme of our dually dismal and volatile financial year in 2009.  This is a year that has artists turning to their everyday environment before venturing forth to invest in anything new. At least that seems to be the larger issue tackled by Zolla/Lieberman’s diverse show “Second Stories: Artists Making Do and Fixing Up,” which consists of works almost all produced in 2009. The up-to-date artistic production allows the exhibited... [more]
