Wisconsin is Chicago’s other. I live near Palmer Square Park in Logan Square. So I thought I lived in a verdant environment, until I visited Wisconsin this last weekend. Now I knew beforehand that the coast of Wisconsin held rolling green hills, grassy meadows and luminous views of Lake Michigan. But I hadn’t counted on the lushness of the Cheese Curd State (I don’t know if that’s... [more]

An artist working in collage can make one of two major statements: by selecting and cutting material from piles of old magazines, the collagist either despairingly critiques the ever-flowing fountain of consumer information, or else she is a cosmopolite, joining disparate faces and places into a communal frame.
Candace Hunter is this second type of colla... [more]

Reflection: a video program
by Erik Wenzel

It is critical today that exhibition strategies for time-based art are examined. Unlike a painting, sculpture, or photograph, if a video is 7 minutes and 30 seconds, that is exactly how long it takes to “see it.” There are also issues of gallery space, sound levels, light pollution and on. The current video program at Gallery 400 has an interesting approach in that the work of five artists “linked by their varying approaches to artist agency” are screened five days a week... [more]

Jed Fielding at Chicago Cultural Center
June 1st - July 5th

The notion of “the gaze” has become somewhat of a catchphrase with art and has seemingly become inextricable in the discussion of art, its analysis and art theory. However, in these austere yet powerful portraits of blind children in Mexico City, Jed Fielding, a Chicago-based photographer challenges this very concept. This is the last week to see Fielding's "Look at Me," the exhibition closes July 5th. These black and white photographs complicate the role of the viewer and ultim... [more]

Yousuf Karsh’s portraits are instantly recognizable. Ernest Hemingway, Georgia O’Keeffe, Albert Einstein, Winston Churchill, and Marian Anderson, true visual icons of the 20th century, each sat before his photographic lens.
This master portraitist, however, came from humble beginnings. As a teenager the Armenian Karsh fled his native Turkey to live first in Syria and then in Canada with his photographer uncle. Always connected with traditional photographic methods, he honed his skills... [more]
