The land, the missing people and daily lives give ghost like appearances through building, plants and occasional animals that were left behind during the transition of Bensenville.  The essence of socio-political visions and vestiges remain in the mind's eye. embedded [more]

20120530165152-smith In Defiance of History: Rashid Johnson & Cauleen Smith
by
Cauleen Smity at Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) May 12th, 2012 - September 16th, 2012
Posted 5/30/12

Rashid Johnson employs an afrofuturist methodology to create an alternative universe out of black cultural detritus so that histories and possibilities of black life in America can be imagined otherwise. In his current solo show, Message to Our Folks, at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, Johnson projects a concept of blackness that cannot be confined or defined—it is the blackness of the universe, perhaps, which extends beyond the realm of our ability to completely grasp it. At... [more]

On Thursday 26 April, I attended the opening reception of Forms & Fragments at the InterContinental Chicago O'Hare Hotel in Rosemont, Illinois. My expectations of classic "Motel Room Art" and a tacky "Starving Artist Sale" quickly dissipated upon entering The Art Museo section of the lobby. This group show featuring 3-D wall constructions is subtly integrated with artwork from the InterContinental's permanent collection which includes Modern masters such as Rauschenberg. The labyrinth of first fl... [more]

20120413000033-01__41112 The Subtle Perspective
by
Jin Lee at Devening Projects + Editions April 22nd, 2012 - June 2nd, 2012
Posted 5/4/12

As the title suggests, subtle contradictions frame Jin Lee's current show, The Near and the Far at the Devening Project Space. There is always the stark contrast of interior vs. exterior at Devening: the dilapidation of West Carroll that secrets the crisp clean whiteness of the gallery. Lee's photographs soften, yet continue this contrast, playing stark against serene, universality against specificity, and yes, near against the distant far. The works are immaculately installed in the solely dedicated... [more]

...by Kelly Reaves in Newcity: On the surface, David Salkin’s “Room for Views” is a whimsical celebration of texture and pattern—a slight divergence from his work as an interior designer, but certainly not much of a leap. The difference, perhaps, is that in “Room for Views,” Salkin gets to let loose and create his ideal room, “with the hopes of discovering a therapeutic and highly customized environment,” says the artist. Upon further consideration, this whimsical celebration turns int... [more]

Alderman Exhibitions is one of Chicago's favorite galleries and one of the city's most innovative. Recently Alderman relocated and renovated their new digs into a clean, sophisticated gallery space where they are presenting an exhibition of the artists they represent. Daniel Bauer's two photographs of a dust-laden tree and modern architecture are quiet standouts that draw the viewer in with their enigmatic questions. The opening of the new space featured Robert Chase Heishman and Brendan Meara's featu... [more]

The work challenges some basic assumptions of artistic practice, such as the sculpture/painting divide, while based in a vernacular of skateboarding. Read more>> [more]

Ramps and inclines, shifted in scale and material, are relocated and arranged into a quiet obstacle course inside of the East Garfield Park artist-run exhibition space. Read more>> [more]

Time Out Chicago profiles Alderman Exhibitions, Hinge Gallery and the Mission Three new Chicago galleries promote local artists and more.  By Lauren Weinberg We should pour out a PBR for the West Loop’s late, lamented gallery-bookshop Golden Age, which closed in November. Yet 2011 was the first year since the recession that Chicago didn’t hemorrhage exhibition spaces. Moreover, the city gained some venues that are notable for their generous visions of what a commercial gall... [more]

Back in 2002, John Allen Muhammad, the “Washington Sniper,” captivated the country through his brief months of infamy as he made his way with his young accomplice Lee Boyd Malvo on a long and winding road from Washington state, through the Southwest and Deep South, to Maryland and Washington, D.C. gunning down twenty-seven random victims with his rifle. In 2005, photographer Joel W. Fisher retraced Muhammad’s journey, shooting with his camera the depopulated sites of the killer’s deeds. Leaving as... [more]
