Where were you born and where do you currently reside?JL: I was born in Brazil, in a small and backwards rural town, but it was there that I was lucky to absorb a love of nature because of my upbringing and spending a lot of time with my maternal grandparents' farm. I currently reside in San Francisco, the city that pulls me back when I try to spread my wings... I don't fully understand this love affair we have, me and this city, but I honor it.
How long have you been a practicing artist?JL: I've always felt creative and... [more]

Life blessed me not with a Lion's Mane,
And it blesses me not with the strength of Sampson's Fame.
Instead, Life blessed with the scalp of a saint,
A Tonsured Soul to contemplate.
It leads me in
This humbling crown....
Like Shakyamuni Buddha,
I too, want to hide in a cave
And envision a Reality
That will transcend it all. [more]
The last time I wrote while on a train, I was on a too familiar ride going a sliver of the way up the East coast of the US from Washington, DC to Philadelphia. Today, I am on an unfamiliar train on the island of Java, going from Jakarta to Yogyakarta. There is no justifiable way to compare that familiar American train with this Indonesian one. All I can do is keep my eyes open, to observe and describe. Today I am leaving behind the hectic buzz of the city of Jakarta. It is a city that... [more]
[more]

I live between crying men, dirty old town apartments, bars and bodies with tattoos, high self-confidence, shaved, perfumed, long, short, all kind of outfit stretching out on the sun for more attention, more attention, more boys. Shining, shining, shining..and between those, that dress only black, always black.
I live between churches, galleries, wineries, souvenir shops, souvenir makers, buyers. Souvenir people… between stocking shops, expensive stocking ladies, that k... [more]

Susanna Mäkinen (S) Juan Kasari (J)
Skype Interview 2.7.2013
S: What does the exhibition title mean and why is it in German?
J: I had read old articles in German to do with optics, whilst making the Spectroscope and I kept running in to the same German word over and over again in different contexts. The word seemed to have a lot of the same meanings as this exhibition. When I wrote my press release I was playing around with various expressions, that I could use to describe the content o... An art life of over 4 decades has taken my work through many phases. Painter, Mixed-Media, Sculpture, Installation, Digital Prints and Lithographs -- all have been exhibited and garnered grants.
The flood of Irene and the hurricane Sandy set me back 2 years: my studio has been rebuilt. I am rediscovering oils and excited to explore new themes. "Tsunami:Loss" and "Mountains, Barriers and Poppy Fields" all encaustic, were my last solo shows. Now, after disasters of my own, I am teasing and... [more]
Contemporary art has been stuck, locked in a frozen space that began somewhere around the moment that Andy Warhol capitalized on capitalism. It’s gigantic. It’s grotesquely commercial. It’s elitist and cold. And, guess what, it’s dead. I know, I know, there are a few of you who want us to stay trapped in this era, mostly commodities traders that claim to be collectors or those who love the idea of dismissing beauty and emotion as insignificant notions of the uneducated. But let m... [more]
