Today, in the times of technical progress, mass production and new artificial materials I search for inspiration in the foundation of the Arts - old Russian Orthodox icons, Renaissance and folk cultures. I seek out look for new shapes and images within my themes using different materials, but my favorite is glass for its plasticit... [more]

Post-Capitalist Hip Hop Videos: Our Absurd, Dystopian World   Pick-button-5bf6c1b36c3b74ec8f312c7c9f6f1ae3

Hip Hop and capitalism could be said to share the same ideals. American Hip Hop and the American Dream promote the same goal of self-made material success through carefree consumerism. Money—and spending it—saturates songs and artist monikers (Curren$y, Rich Gang, 50 Cent, All$tar, etc.). Hip Hop’s aesthetic identity has traditionally communicated just as much about consumerist society as its songs. But as confidence in capitalism is waning, with the mass disillusionment followi... Art or Not? Mattresses
by
11/6/14 Posted 11/6/14

Art or Not? One of the pictures described below is a genuine art work: every Friday the ArtSlant team asks our discerning readers to indulge in a game of spot the difference. The answer will be revealed on our social media on Monday: Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram. This week's theme is: mattresses. #1 "the artist, born in Glasgow, 1982, uses public space in this series of street interventions, where the artwork becomes part of it's background, barely perceived by the hurried commuter. Discarded every day objects and household items appear t... [more]

ISO 216

Con Artist presents ISO 216, a collaboration between artists from New York and London. Named in honor of the world’s most common paper size ratio which, like so many of global standards of weights and measure, is notably rare in the US, ISO 216 celebrates the cultural parallels and unique individuality of the United Kingdom and United States. The two nations are ethnically diverse, share a common language, and are each massive exporters of art and culture, but as their slightly different pa... [more]

10 Iconic Punk Record Sleeves   Pick-button-5bf6c1b36c3b74ec8f312c7c9f6f1ae3

To say the overall breadth of the US punk scene through the 80s and 90s is sprawling is to make a massive understatement; thousands of bands and myriad esoteric subgenres mean that picking a mere ten examples of choice record cover art is a weighty and daunting proposition. Conspicuous absences abound—a list like this failing to feature Ray Pettibon could be considered more than heretical, but how do you choose between Nervous Breakdown and Slip It In?—but what follows is a relatively t... There's something new happening at FIAC this year. Not exactly the quickest to catch on to a trend, the Parisian art fair has created its own satellite, with a focus on introducing new art and artists from the international scene through a showcase of 68 galleries from 14 countries. Judged by a selection panel of art historians and curators, the tangential fair's emphasis is on supporting the underdog—not only the up-and-comings, but also "outsiders" and artists who have been overlooked h... What Does Paris' Deflated Butt Plug Say About Art?   Pick-button-5bf6c1b36c3b74ec8f312c7c9f6f1ae3

Is it possible that there is someone out there, in the admittedly rather narrow demographic of folk who read this and other art related material, who hasn’t heard of Paul McCarthy’s forceful insertion of a thirty foot high inflatable replica Butt Plug into one of Paris’ most desirable addresses? And yes, in case you were wondering, there is a fair chance that this puerile level of double entendre will continue throughout. If nothing else it gives me, the humble writer, a chance... [more]

Art Review's 2014 Power 100: Money Is Power (Still)   Pick-button-5bf6c1b36c3b74ec8f312c7c9f6f1ae3

As Camus incisively observed, it is our lot as human beings to try (and fail) to give meaning to life's invisible forces. Thrust out into the real world, after you finish your education ( and unless you're in the army) there's no way to know just how important you are. Yes, you're the Director of the Tate—but how to validate the magnitude of your success? As Three 6 Mafia would say "We eat so many shrimp"—but sometimes, we get iodine poisoning. The Art Review Power 100 is a shining exampl... [more]

Zines—short run and independently produced miniature magazines—have been a staple tool in various underground communities for decades. While traces of the zine aesthetic can be followed back throughout history, the true imagery of the contemporary zine was fathered back in the 1980s with punk rock culture being the topic of choice. Early punks would take their Xeroxed sketches, photos, literary musings—and whatever else their bleeding hearts desired—and compile them into sma... [more]

The recent Swedish election grabbed national headlines: Pharell appeared onstage in Stockholm with Feminist Party candidate Gudrun Schyman. Schyman is no stranger to the 'sleb, having been a popular contestant herself on Let's Dance, Sweden's version of Strictly Come Dancing, and is a pal of ABBA. Schyman's party may have lost out to the center-left Social Democrats lead by Stefan Löfven, but her daughter, a former graffiti writer, will be happy nonetheless: last week the new government announc... Good evening, art-appreciators! Please pull up a Beuysian chair, with a heap of fat on it, because I have something to ask you: Had a good Frieze, did you, reader? Drank some complimentary champagne? Saw at least one instance of 'is this art'? Hung out at Selfridges Hotel, in a dress with spaghetti straps? Wore a black smock instead—normcore style? Said the words "art market," and didn't even flinch at how serious you were about it? Listened, once, "ironically," to "Anaconda" by Nicki Minaj a... [more]

Internet Fooled AGAIN by Banksy Arrest Hoax

Banksy is trending this morning as a fake article emerged with news of his arrest in Watford, Hertfordshire, by the London Metropolitan Police. Reports and images from fake news website National Report stated that Banksy's real identity had been revealed as Paul Horner, a 35-year-old male from Liverpool. His identity had apparently been confirmed by his PR, Jo Brooks. The arrest of the ubiquitously famous graffiti artist—who has remained anonymous for his entire career—was attribut... [more]
