Ryan Reggiani at Hap Gallery > Worldwide Portland
March 6th - March 29th
Posted 3/26/14

New York City-based artist Ryan Reggiani fills the gallery with an accomplished selection of works across a diverse range of media. The elegant sculpture "Untitled (Hanging)" employs straight and curved steel rods in immaculate counterposition. There is a sense of whimsy in another set of wall sculptures comprised of light bulbs and electrical cords within a metal frame. In a dramatic suite of standing concrete sculptures, the artist has stacked hollow forms around a central axis of metal rods, de... [more]

Kathleen Elliot at Tenri Cultural Institute of New York > New York

Posted 3/3/14

New York Kathleen Elliot Tenri Cultural Institute of New York by Dominick Lombardi Kathleen Elliot's glass sculptures straddle the line between ritual and playfulness. Her work, which stems from a love of natural forms, explores how the wonders of nature, big and small, have an indisputable calming effect on us as we muddle through the distractions of daily life. Works such as Whispering Vine (2008) recall ceremonial dance, as a circle of latticed glass, capped with upward-reaching leaves,... [more]

It Was For the Children Photo of Simon Metke, 33, by Jana G. Pruden via Edmonton Journal Edmonton resident and small time weed dealer Simon Metke had no idea he was in possession of a stolen ancient Persian artifact valued at $1.2 million, so just chill out. Canadian officials raided Metke’s apartment late last month, and (according to the Edmonton Journal) Metke was just sort of like, woah, “What the heck is going on?” “There’s like 20 RCMP officers flooding my... Land-Art Legend Nancy Holt Passes On (1938-2014)
by
2/13/14 Posted 2/13/14

Sun Tunnels (1976) via CLUI Photographer, videographer, and sculptor Nancy Holt, 75, passed away Saturday in Manhattan after fighting a long battle with Leukemia. Holt, best known for her monumental sized sculptures in Southwest, was one of the first, and most notable, pioneers of the Land-art movement of the 60s and 70s. She was a rarity in her time, both as a woman in an art world still largely dominated by men and as an artist eschewing the gallery for on-site installations. Over her fif... [more]

The exhibition is good, and congrats to the artist. A good friend of mine told me a rather disturbing story recently. He had been working with scott for years, and scott has helped him a great deal. Recently scott has not been able to sell as much art to pay his bills and has resorted to throwing events to sustain his gallery. Scott openly admits his failure, in his bathroom there is a painting that says 'BLACKBALL' which he says he got an employee to make in order to remind him how his ex-wife ha... [more]

by

Forbes released its list of 30 under 30 in Art & Style this week, carving out 5 places for fine artists and surprising us (as well as the Forbes authors) with Jemima Kirke, better known for her role as the cheeky, free-spirited British girl, Jessa Johansson, on HBO's Girls. Surprising because she wasn't selected for her acting, which is superb, but for her painting, which is mediocre. Her expressive oil paintings of her friends aren’t particularly good, although they aren’t parti... [more]
