Kiran Subbaiah at Chatterjee & Lal Gallery > India
December 21st, 2012 - February 9th

Kiran Subbaiah wanted to kill himself in  Suicide Note (2006) because that’s the way truly famous people rolled, according to him. While viewing Narcissicon (2012), it seemed that he had made a miserable botch of a suicide. Because this time, his selves have multiplied, taken up residence together and freely borrow clothes from each other, get into scuffles, stabbings and passive-aggressive arguments. Kiran Subbaiah, a contemporary artist based in Bengaluru has been delighting and provoking us with his conceptual scu... [more]

OKMT: LONG PLAYS   A CONCRETE CLOWN HEAD. Mouth agape, tongue spilling out onto an astroturfed lawn. A crumbling relic. Krusty’s kid brother.  The putting green is littered with cigarette butts and beer cans. Amateur graffiti and petty vandalism designate adolescent rebellion at its finest: School Night stages the aftermath of an illicit late night game of Crazy Golf and is the spatially dominant centerpiece of Texan collective OKAY MOUNTAIN’S first Los Angeles solo exhibition at Mark M... Elena Berriolo: Transcription of Piero Manzoni's Infinite Line with Sewing Machine Charles Bernstein Nothing could be more purely poetic than the line, so it is perhaps less a metaphor than usual to think of Elena Berriolo's performance as a reflection on the verse line. Charles Olson was once asked, how long is a line? He put his chalk to the board and ran a line to the end and continues, chalk in hand, to walk out of the room. Berriolo's work had something of that quality, tho... [more]

This artform is very unique. A hybrid between conceptual and traditional art. Made with the help of wild black bears, martens, crows , songbirds, insects, snow, rain and fire. A very unpredicatble process with a reliquary object at the end. Hladik is using "divine" forces to intervene with his semi=readymades, which are then embalmed and preserved... [more]

Bad Behaviour show review Oct 2012   On the walk from Brixton train station to visit Bad Behaviour, past clothes stalls, car mechanics and food wholesalers which operate underneath the arches – including the wonderfully named ‘Just Yams etc.’ – I wondered how this group exhibition was going to position itself.  Would it attempt to engage with the context of Brixton, its independent spirit and history of rebellion and rioting  – or was the ‘bad behaviour’ of the title indicative... I went to the Appropriated Gender opening on Saturday night. So many interesting works of art were spread across three floors, from Kandy Lopez's attitude-filled giant portraits to the thoughtful craft-inspired works of Martin Casuso, an adorable painting ("Kissable") of one of JC Bravo's big-headed cabezones and a latch-hook rug by Kathleen Kranack that will remind you, "It's Your Fault."  Artist Karla Caprali has three works in Appropriated Gender. I could go on about some of the works, which include sculpture, ins... [more]

Today, during Claire Bishop’s discussion of her much talked about new book “Artificial Hells”, at the San Francisco art space Kadist, I asked her a question that went something like the following: “What aesthetic void does the colloquialism “Social practice” fill ?, And by the way, what the hell does “Social Practice” mean? Where does this word come from? Resembling the word “social work” it seems at best irrelevant and at worst offensive. The efficacy of it’s impact? What d... [more]
