Hello frends! I am an artist. My roots take place in St.Petersburg, which has great architecture, culture and history that influenced me once and forever. Today, in the times of technical progress, mass production and new artificial materials I search for inspiration in the foundation of the Arts - old Russian Orthodox icons, Renaissance and folk cultures. I seek out look for new shapes and images within my themes using different materials, but my favorite is glass for its plasticit... [more]

Forrest Bess at Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive June 11th - September 14th
Posted 9/4/14

Among the giants (Rothko, Still, and Pollock) represented by the Betty Parsons gallery in the 50’s and 60’s, there roamed the small but potent work of an artist named Forrest Bess. He hailed from Bay City, Texas, a bait fisherman and oil rig roughneck by day, and a conduit for the visualization of eternal truths by night. Parsons heard his name through the grapevine, and when she came to Texas, she ate him up with her silver spoon. Parsons mounted no less than six solo exhibits of B... [more]

Me and Mrs. Rosenberg
by
9/1/14 Posted 9/1/14

I used to live in a high rise apartment building in Chicago, Illinois that had an overwhelmingly large population of Jewish widows. I ended up becoming quite friendly with many of them. Cookie, Thelma, Harriet, Eleanor. A veritable stable of adopted Bubbies. I recently finished writing a fictionalized short story of some of these ladies for issue three of Majestic Disorder magazine. They were and are darling yentas, who elevated matzo ball soup to pure delight. My favorite part of my days spent in... [more]

Vincent Van Gogh at Beurs van Berlage May 24th - December 24th
Posted 8/28/14

There’s some buzz in New York this summer because all seventeen of the Met’s van Gogh paintings are on view together for the first time in over ten years. That’s nice, though an abundance of van Gogh paintings isn’t something that preoccupies us too much here in Amsterdam. In fact, right now we’ve got too many—including quite a few of the ones currently installed at the Met. Packed wall-to-wall in the basement of the Beurs van Berlage these days are some two hund... Art and the Environment in East-Central Europe Introduction - from a special issue of ARTMargins
by
8/27/14 Posted 8/27/14

Art and the Environment in East-Central Europe is an editorial project born from interviews and other forms of interaction with artists and cultural producers concerned, in one way or another, with the idea and the material reality of what goes by the name of the "natural environment." In the different pieces collected within this project, the term "environment" unfolds into a broad variety of concepts and artistic practices that do not, and should not, become homogenized. A survey rather than... [more]

Black and White are Colours Too: the Ambitious Experiments of Tito’s Photography
by
8/22/14 Posted 8/22/14

from Bakwa magazine Tito Valery (Photo Credit February 16th) To observe the world in colour, especially through photographs, can be deceptive— years of perfectioning technicolour have made that possible. We tend to focus on the gloriousness of the colours, overlooking the simple things that really matter. Perhaps this reverence for colour dates back to Greek tradition, which affirms that beauty is not only symmetria (symmetry) but also chroma (colour). It would be a shame if we are t... [more]

How, Against Stacked Odds, Did Art by an African Artist Become the Centerpiece of the World’s Most Prestigious Contemporary Showcase?
by
8/21/14 Posted 8/21/14

from The Ann Arbor Review of Books South African Artist Wim Botha has prepared an incredible work of carved books for the Venice Biennale. “Unless there’s terrible news Africa doesn’t get much notice in this part of the world.” Thus begins a piece by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Holland Cotter, for The New York Times. The piece, titled “A Million Pieces of Home”, subconsciously reveals a patronizing ideology which more often than not pervades the We... [more]

When Depression Strikes - HYPERALLERGIC

Installation view of “Depression” at Francois Ghebaly Gallery. All images by the author for Hyperallergic. LOS ANGELES — It was 4:20pm when I walked into Depression and encountered Andrea Ursuta’s piece “Stoner” (2013). A batting-cage ball-throwing machine creaked on, spun once, and died before it could eject anything from its quarantined-off belly. It is located inside a larger batting cage. There is no entrance. There is no bat to play with. Stones are... [more]
