With “Intimate Portraits” Mario Cutolo builds images that place the portrait's subject in an artificial context via a series of layers of different photographs. Cutolo wants his audience to be “exstranged,” that is, to feel something that one at once recognizes, then gets lost in that sensation. The juxtaposition of the familiar and unfamiliar reveals the uneasiness of the person within his or her comfort zone.
