Bozar - Palais des beaux-arts de Bruxelles

The exhibitions that the FotoMuseum has been organising with Bozar in the Centre for Fine Arts since 2005 always use the museum’s collections as a starting point. The Junctions series, the third edition of which is being held in 2012, seeks to find new ways in, new perspectives and angles on the FotoMuseum’s enormous collection. The Junctions series lets contemporary photographers put together an exhibition using the FotoMuseum collections in combination with their own work.

Lara Dhondt’s work deals with the idea of daydreams. She uses litter and waste materials that she finds on location during one of her walks to create her own constructions, which are, at the same time, part of the environment. These creations are often connected to the idea of shelter, and are built around the dimensions of personal space. The shelter can be seen as a primary sculpture, a sculpture that is left behind in the public space and can only exist for a short time. These demarcations of space and primary sculptures become nomadic symbols – poetic stages for ideas of resistance and psychological migration.

These public sculptures reappear later as photographic representations in the exhibition room, printed on materials such as rusted steel, cardboard, paper, and wood.

Lara Dhondt (born in Turnhout in 1979) lives in Brussels and works with the urban landscape. In her work she uses different media including photography, installations, video, typography, and performance.

Les expositions que le FotoMuseum organise avec Bozar depuis 2005 au Palais des Beaux-Arts ont toujours pour point de départ la collection du musée. Les séries Junctions, dont la troisième édition a lieu en 2012, recherchent également des formes alternatives d’élargissement de la collection, de nouveaux aspects et de nouvelles approches de l’énorme collection du FotoMuseum. La série Junctions offre à des photographes contemporains l'opportunité de mettre sur pied une exposition qui combine des pièces issues de la collection du FotoMuseum avec leurs propres œuvres.

Le travail de Lara Dhondt fait référence au concept de rêve éveillé. Les matériaux qu'elle utilise pour réaliser ses constructions dans le paysage urbain sont des détritus et des déchets trouvés sur place pendant l’une de ses promenades et qui font désormais partie intégrante de leur environnement. Ces constructions font souvent penser à des abris et leurs dimensions sont celles d’un espace individuel. Le refuge comme sculpture primaire. Une sculpture qui est abandonnée à l’espace public et qui n’existe que pendant un bref laps de temps. Les démarcations spatiales et les sculptures primaires se changent en symboles nomades, telles des estrades poétiques de résistance, en référence à une migration psychique.

Ces sculptures publiques réapparaissent ensuite comme représentations photographiques dans l’espace d’exposition, imprimées sur des matériaux comme de l’acier rouillé, du carton, du papier, du bois…

De tentoonstellingen die het FotoMuseum samen met Bozar sinds 2005 in het Paleis voor Schone Kunsten organiseert hebben steeds de collectie van het museum als uitgangspunt. Ook in de reeks Junctions, waarvan in 2012 de derde aflevering plaatsvindt, wordt gezocht naar alternatieve vormen van ontsluiting van de collectie, nieuwe aspecten en invalshoeken van de enorme verzameling van het FotoMuseum. De reeks Junctions laat hedendaagse fotografen een tentoonstelling samenstellen uit de collectie van het FotoMuseum gecombineerd met eigen werk.

Het werk van Lara Dhondt refereert aan het idee van dagdromen. De materialen die ze gebruikt om constructies in het stedelijke landschap op te bouwen zijn het zwerfvuil en afval, gevonden ter plekke tijdens een van haar wandelingen en ondertussen eigen geworden aan de omgeving. Deze constructies hebben vaak een connotatie met de schuilplaats,en zijn gebaseerd op afmetingen van een persoonlijke ruimte. De shelter als primaire sculptuur. Een sculptuur die in de publieke ruimte wordt achtergelaten en maar gedurende korte tijd kan bestaan. Ruimtelijke afbakeningen en primaire sculpturen veranderen in nomadische tekens, functionerend als poëtische podia voor verzet, verwijzend naar een psychische migratie.

Deze publieke sculpturen verschijnen later opnieuw als fotografische representaties in de tentoonstellingsruimte, geprint op materialen zoals roestend staal, karton, papier, hout,…
