Zoe Beloff (Edinburgh, Scotland, 1958) is the second artist to be invited to create an intervention in the Vrielynck Collection at the invitation of the M HKA and the curator Edwin Carels (KASK/HoGent).

Zoe Beloff looks for ways of visualising the mind’s unconscious processes and tries to connect them to the technology of the moving image. She is not interested in the technology, but in the psychology that underlies it – she calls it ‘the dream life of technology’.

The basic idea behind The Infernal Dream of Mutt and Jeff was found in the industrial and educational films of the 40s, 50s and 60s that Beloff found at the Baruch College in Manhattan: ‘the Powerpoint presentations of the period’ as she calls them. Her installation consists of a projected video triptych in which she seamlessly combines newly-filmed passages with historical documentaries. She uses a copy of the original set to give a context to items from the Vrielynck Collection that were manufactured to make this sort of documentary, such as 16mm cameras and projectors by Bell and Howell, Auricon and Ampro.

Zoe Beloff zoekt in haar werk naar manieren om de onbewuste processen van de geest te verbeelden en probeert daarbij verbindingen te maken met de technologie van het bewegende beeld. Niet de technologie op zich interesseert haar, maar wel welke psychologie daaraan ten grondslag ligt. Zelf heeft ze het over ‘het droomleven van de technologie’.

Uitgangspunt voor De helse droom van Mutt en Jeff waren industriële en educatieve films uit de jaren 40-60 die Beloff vond in Baruch College in Manhattan: ‘powerpointpresentaties van die tijd’, in haar woorden. Haar installatie bestaat uit een geprojecteerde videotriptiek waarin ze naadloos nieuwe opnames met historische documentaires combineert. Een nagebouwde set gebruikt ze om stukken uit de Vrielynck Collectie te contextualiseren die geproduceerd werden om dat soort documentaires te maken, bijvoorbeeld 16mm-camera’s en projectors van Bell and Howell, Auricon en van Ampro.

Dans son œuvre, Zoe Beloff cherche le moyen de représenter les processus inconscients de l’esprit et tente dans cette démarche de créer des liens avec les technologies de l’image en mouvement. Elle ne s’intéresse pas à la technologie en tant que telle, mais à la psychologie qui la sous-tend et parle ainsi de « la vie rêvée de la technologie ».

Le point de départ de l’exposition Le rêve infernal de Mutt et Jeff sont des films éducatifs et industriels des années 40-60 que Beloff a trouvés au Baruch College à Manhattan : « les présentations PowerPoint de l’époque » comme elle les qualifie. Son installation se compose de triptyques de projections vidéo dans lesquels elle marie de manière parfaitement harmonieuse de nouvelles images et des documentaires historiques. Elle se sert d’un décor reconstitué pour contextualiser des pièces de la Collection Vrielynck produites pour réaliser ce type de documentaires, par exemple, des caméras 16 mm et des projecteurs Bell & Howell, Auricon et Ampro.
