Bozar - Palais des beaux-arts de Bruxelles

This latest exhibition brings together 14 photographers at the instigation of BOZAR and the photography museums of Antwerp and Charleroi. Together, they will examine the fine line that now separates documentary photography and fine art photography. The fact is that, since the 1980s, photography has been permanently elevated to the rank of art, but has never been so used in the vast stock of photo-journalism. This documentary and social veneer is brought out in art photographs which enhance the supporting document. Belgian photography does not escape this ambiguity between documentary framework and metaphoric and conceptual narration. Beyond the Document offers a unique snapshot, combining, in a single medium, objectivity and subjectivity, fiction and reality, report and concept, document and work of art.

De tentoonstelling toont werk van 14 fotografen, op initiatief van BOZAR en de fotomusea van Antwerpen en Charleroi. Samen verkennen ze de dunne scheidingslijn die vandaag tussen documentaire fotografie en kunstfotografie loopt. De fotografie is sinds de jaren 80 definitief tot de kunstsector gaan behoren, maar heeft tegelijk nog nooit zo overvloedig geput uit de immense schatkamer van de fotojournalistiek als vandaag. Op die manier heeft de kunstfotografie een documentair-maatschappelijk vernis gekregen dat het document als drager versterkt. De Belgische fotografie ontsnapt niet aan die dubbelzinnigheid tussen documentaire inslag en metaforisch-conceptuele vertellingen. Beyond the Document biedt hierin een unieke inkijk, waarbij objectiviteit en subjectiviteit, fictie en werkelijkheid, reportage en concept, document en kunstwerk in hetzelfde beeld worden vermengd.

Cette exposition réunit 14 photographes à l’instigation de BOZAR et des musées de la photographie d’Anvers et de Charleroi. Ensemble, ils vont interroger la ligne de démarcation, ténue, qui sépare aujourd’hui la photographie documentaire de la photographie d’art. Il est un fait que la photographie, depuis les années ’80, s’est définitivement hissée au rang des arts plastiques, mais elle ne s’est jamais autant servie dans l’immense stock du photojournalisme. Ce vernis documentaire et sociétal ressort ainsi des photographies d’art et renforcent le document qui en est le support. La photographie belge n’échappe pas à cette ambiguïté entre trame documentaire et narrations métaphorique et conceptuelle. Beyond the Document en offre le cliché inédit, combinant sur un même support objectivité et subjectivité, fiction et réalité, reportage et concept, document et œuvre.
