Watchlist Artist: EVOL

During the « Brussels Art Days », the Bodson-Emelinckx Gallery, a contemporary art gallery, has the pleasure to present the new works of EVOL, from the 7th of September to the 6th of October 2012.

Evol, born in Heilbronn in 1970, studied design at the Kuopio Academy of Arts and Crafts of Finland and at the Hfg Schwäbisch Gmüden in Germany and finally chose the orientation of visual art.

Empassioned by urban frontages and architecture, the artist combines a stencilling technique with spray cans to transform electric boxes and pieces of cardboard into real miniaturized façades of buildings.

In 2011, he raised his work to the next level by creating a miniaturized city of 80m2 in Hamburg for the Ms Dockville music festival.

With shadows and perspectives, Evol’s works can almost be considered as photorealistic.

More about EVOL (b. 1970, Heilbronn, Germany)

Berlin-based artist EVOL creates impossibly realistic paintings of architectural structures common in the former East using stencils and spray paint, the typecast tools of graffiti writers and agitprop street artists.

Painting in the public sphere on defunct East Berlin electrical cabinets, or found concrete blocks in an abondoned Dresden slaughterhouse, EVOL miniaturizes the low-income apartment buildings of the Post-Soviet-Bloc that remain iconic monuments of the Iron Curtain’s socialist failings. His work is thus a eulogy for the individualism and inspiration suffocated by attempts at urban utopia and, who inject poignant meaning into otherwise lifeless slabs of concrete and stone.
