August 13th - August 31st

by Alexandra Chipkin On the evening of August 13th Guilmi seemed to be waking up. A cacophony of voices could be heard as townspeople and visitors gathered in a small piazza to listen to stories beingread aloud from inside a van. Later this van was opened up to reveal photographs lining the inside of the car: forming a small gallery. This gallery is in fact the perfect size for this town of no more than 200 people. The exhibition is called Avanzi, or leftovers. It is the result of about three we... [more]

By: Amy Haddad Michael and Yhelena Hall’s thought-provoking installation at The Mission in Chicago does more than draw attention to the environment. This show reveals practical solutions to contemporary problems. Partial exhibition shot of “Wilderness and Household.” Creating artwork that generates awareness to environmental issues is nothing new. Agnes Denes famously created “Wheatfield” in 1982. Two acres of wheat were planted and harvested in a Manhattan l... [more]

It isn’t often that you get the chance to look into the workings of a family of artists over three generations, laying themselves open to scrutiny and speculation on their relationships. With the age of the artists ranging from the mature seventies to the youthful twenties, the work is bound to be wildly diversified; from the skilled and honed creativity of one generation to the enthusiastic optimism of another, with all sharing a dedication to, and love of, the arts, each exploring and de... Metamorphosis VI. Oil on canvas. 1986. Images courtesy Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, Delhi. Contemporary art discourse constantly refers to the male gaze as it stays trained on a female body: longing, projecting, mapping, invading. But when the male gaze turns inwards, towards its host male body, not... [more]

International artist Tom Estes has been invited by curator Rebecca Feiner to act as Honorary Mayor of DEN-City1. Estes describes himself as a “Sci-fi inspired Carnival Sideshow Conceptualist, combining a bare-bones formal conceptualism with an eternally adolescent, DIY comic-prank approach”. Organised with Middlesex University, DEN-City1 is part of The London Festival of Architecture, a month long celebration of architectural experimentation, thinking and practice. I’ m sure I... [more]

A gaggle of young adults dressed to the nines on a street corner in Silver Lake, CA, is not an uncommon occurrence. It probably happens every day for some reason or another. It’s not so common, however, when the entire street corner itself is also dressed up. At the intersection of Bates and Sunset, you can see an entire block coated in white wash. The former Bates Motel and its surroundings, including fences, barbed wire, palm trees, and shrubbery, are all covered in an organic, lime-ba... [more]

Northwest Florida's little know Digital Graffiti Festival at Alys Beach has just announced its 27 artist line-up for its 8th edition taking place in 2015. Digital Graffiti (creating graffiti using computer software and technology) is a relatively undeveloped field, surprising considering the surge of interest in both graffiti and digital arts practices respectively. The festival elicits participants come from the fields of film, art, and music who project their art on site at Alys Beach, a luxury devel... [more]

I entered the small, unassuming gallery space as a bearded head popped out from the back of the room and said, “Are you here to get your MFA?” “Yes!” I replied cheerfully. Because I was. I read that I could get an MFA in just one day at the Tenderloin Institute of Art, hosted by SFAQ, and I was immediately on board. If showing up was the application process, I was already excelling with flying colors. The man introduced himself as Dean Jeremiah Jenkins, and together... [more]

Adel Gorgy's work in Issues at Arts Guild New Jersey Contemporary art and social activism often swim in the same waters. The connection crosses borders and decades, as creative individuals—in art and literature, performance and song—have given voice, sometimes the only one, to victims of turmoil and iniquities. Issues, an exhibition in which a group of contemporary artists respond to political, social, racial, gender, and economic issues facing the world in recent years opened M... [more]

A Change is Gonna Come Solo exhibition Marco Pezzotta (1985)Curated by Bogomir Doringer *** The artistic interest from Marco Pezzotta lays in examining different systems in which our identity is being either formed or changed. We stand in those systems as individuals or as part of a group. For describing and shaping these relations Marco Pezzotta uses objects that function as tools for a narrative. They appear from another space and time, floating between digital and physical. The artist creates... [more]
