Reflections on the consequences of rampant globalization and on the urgent need for spaces of contemplation and dreams: born in the final phase of the Cultural Revolution, Qiu Zhijie captures his Twilight of the Idols in sculptural and performative installations that show the ambivalent nature of the Nanjing Yangtze Bridge, a symbolic monument to modernization and ideology - and the scene of thousands of suicides. Qiu Zhije represented China this year at the Venice Biennale.9.10., 21 h Artist Talk Qiu Zhijie, who represented China at this year’s Venice Biennale, engages in a discussion about his art practice with Andreas Schmid (artist and expert on contemporary Chinese art, Berlin). The focus of the conversation will be his latest project, the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge, which is part of his exhibition at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt . Moreover, they will discuss the conditions governing art production in today's China. The evening is entitled "Qiao Ke Li," the word’s untranslatability ironically sums up the two poles of Zhijie’s art: lightness and monumentality. Spoken aloud, the word Qiao Ke Li is easily (mis-) understood as meaning chocolate. In the transfer of characters, it creates a yet different context: the translation of artistic ability into energy for action. |
