> DESCRIPTION

In „Cadre / Cache“, the second solo exhibition by Alexandra Leykauf (*1976) in our gallery, we show wax crayon drawings from 2008 and 2009 as well as large sized prints. Both series stem from a basic subject – the filmic view on space, which thinks along the visible and the hidden at the same time. Parts of the space are hidden and so the imagination of the viewer becomes active.

The concept of „framing“ derives from film theory and questions the various ways to reflect the cutout of a picture. It deals with the problem: what can be considered outside of the image? Leykauf lends the terms of the filmic sight and transfers them into drawing and photography.
Her wax crayon drawings are overpainted by black oil paint and partly scratched out. They play with the frame (cadre) and the hidden (cache). This method leads to the questions: what is behind the black oil paint, how does the space continue, which perspective is shown. The wax crayon drawings from 2008 are titled after the addresses of the houses, which are shown. The new wax crayon drawings from 2009 with titles like „Carnival Ballet“ or „After the Fall“ show stage settings.

The prints in the front room of our gallery play with views of the real and the temporarily changed gallery space. Leykauf fixed large sized photographies of other spaces in our gallery space and made photos of this composition. Thus she creates new images from a different, illusionary space. The change arranged by a photographic intervention is a game with camouflage. The topic of illusion and elusiveness and the play with perspectives is one of the main subjects of Leykauf. The exhibition will lead us directly into the center of her artistic concepts.

Gallery Sassa Truelzsch, Berlin will present an exhibition with Alexandra Leykauf at the same time.
