Shi Xinning, widely known for inserting Mao into his painted photographs of film stars and lead-ing figures from the worlds of art, literature and politics, depicts the "hero of the Long March" not only as a politician but as a sociable guest, easy conversationalist and lover of art. It is an artistic intervention that brings into focus the fact that nothing was further from Mao's mind than the furtherance of cultural dialogue or the assignment of even the slightest importance to artistic free-dom.
With Tale of the Two Cities we will show new works by Shi Xinning which form a dialogue between the cities Beijing and Berlin, and their respective histories.
