Melting Metropolises

Broken City, Sin City, Gotham City. The Great Gatsby, The Godfather, Gordon Gekko. Batman, Spiderman, Superman. Who came first, the person or the city? Who creates whom? The people or the metropolis?

These are some of the questions asked in my series of photos entitled Liquid Cities. With the superposition of buildings, and structures, is it a dream or a mirage or reflections of hopes, wishes and dreams.

Robert Altman’s Short Cuts comes to mind. Influenced by the city in which they live, his characters shape and touch others as they change. Mysterious desolate characters wander or dream in this series of photos. Others watch them cautiously. Some are lost in their own thoughts. Are these cities real, or just fragments of dreams, evolving with the dreamers. Will they disappear if the dreamers wake up?

Metamorphosing into their own futures, these cities melt into the millions of opportunities that their inhabitants provide them, in turn providing more opportunities to others.

This series of photos can be viewed during the Liquid Cities and Temporary Identities exhibition, which is on from the10th to the 16th of June, 2013 in Espoo (Finland), at the Espoonsilta Gallery. http://espoonsilta.blogspot.fi/p/international-art.html
