Annabelle Craven-Jones at Cruise & Callas June 25th - July 23rd
Posted 6/21/16

Transmitting information is inherent in today’s networked Internet Age. The information structures of our digital surroundings resemble the inner transmitting systems of nerves and their contacts, the synapses. With the help of messenger substances, neurotransmitters like serotonin pass on information and thereby activate the inner neural system. In her installation Conditions for Neurotransmission [P.O.V.] artist Annabelle Craven-Jones visualizes the mutual effects of both information systems and... [more]

20130923130056-090rep Primary Forms with a Bold Function
Eva Fidjeland, Jane Walker at Galerie Stexwig September 15th, 2013 - October 27th, 2013
Posted 9/23/13

I like the slight melancholy mystery of these images. In general, the softened color palette and contrast evokes a faded memory, but the primary forms have a bold function. `Evolution´ employs a primordial form, spiraling up out of the water like a mythic sea creature. I also see the faintly grainy quality and washed out magenta tonality as harkening back to old photographic documentary film, though I`m unsure of the media/process employed here. I find the vertical orientation is also unexpected fo... [more]

The gallery alexander levy is pleased to be able to present three new work complexes from Julius von Bismarck from 26 April to 15 June 2013 in the exhibit Unfall am Mittelpunkt Deutschlands. Like "Punishment I" in the previous year, the second solo exhibit of Bismarck in the gallery is characterised by a confrontation of "nature" and "culture". A basswood tree was planted in February 1991 in the small community of Niederdorla in the Thuringian province. In April 2013, the tree inexplicably became the... [more]

Showcase Watchlist: Bernhard Winkler
4/16/12 Posted 4/16/12

(Image: Bernhard Winkler, nachtbilder30, digital; © Bernhard Winkler) Bernhard Winkler (b. 1956) Photography is not objective and can not depict the reality, it always remains on the surface, always subjective and interpretive. It creates an illusion of reality. I want to move away from this illusion to a photograph of subjectivity, of emotion. How do I experience my environment? Isn`t my vision more dynamic than the static photo? I associatively connect everything together! My eye moves continuously in the space su... [more]

Licensed by Viscopy, Sydney ) Thomas Demand (b. 1964, Munich, Germany) Combining sculpture and photography, Demand produces disconcerting images. There are no people in his work, and very rarely any letters or numbers. His process begins with a found photograph – whether an image from the news or a postcard – from which he builds a full-scale model out of coloured paper and c... [more]

Aura Rosenberg: On Our Berlin Watchlist

(Image: Aura Rosenberg, Alexanderplatz, 16" x 47; © Aura Rosenberg) Aura Rosenberg (b. New York) An image from Walter Benjamin's writing is the inspiration for the series, titled The Angel of History. In "Thesis on the Philosophy of History", written shortly before his death, Walter Benjamin describes one of Paul Klee's watercolors: Angelus Novus. This small painting, which he owned, portrays an angel. As Benjamin saw it, a wind from paradise has caught the angel's wings and blown it backward... [more]
