Victims of a plague, victims of society   Pick-button-5bf6c1b36c3b74ec8f312c7c9f6f1ae3

Sophie Nys at Galerie Greta Meert February 7th - April 5th
Posted 2/15/14

Angelina Jolie, a lapdog, and a bottle of bubbly: three entities whose relationship to one another doesn’t exactly surprise the modern mind. Yet I was not expecting to see the composition of a celebrity event on the back walls of Greta Meert as I peered in through the gallery’s large windows at Sophie Nys’ third solo show at the downtown venue. My suspicions dissipated when I took an invitation card introducing the exhibition. It featured an image of a plague stone, a motif t... [more]

A sobering and potently nostalgic excursion   Pick-button-5bf6c1b36c3b74ec8f312c7c9f6f1ae3

Mika Taanila at Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma November 1st, 2013 - March 2nd
Posted 1/24/14

In Time Machines Mika Taanila’s fascination with scientific research and technology makes for a sobering and potently nostalgic excursion. This occurs by virtue of the fact that many of Taanila’s works involve the recycling of obsolete technology, popular music excerpts and even segments from some of his own films. In his latest series, Ruff disregards the camera’s role in the photography process altogether. In photograms, now on display at Johnen Galerie in Mitte, Ruff champions the... [more]

by
5/12/13 Posted 5/12/13

San Francisco, May 2013: I met Jason Kalogiros at Building 11, an old warehouse-type structure at Pier 70, near the Port of San Francisco. Surrounded by an assortment of functional and non-functional factories, fences and loading docks, it was built in the early ‘40s by the government to support wartime production and now houses studio space for a selection of artists. We first travel to the back of the studio so Jason can show me his Agfa Repromaster 310 from the late ‘70s. It's an old proces... [more]
