For about two decades now the qualifications “young,” “emerging,” and “new” have functioned as the ultimate buzzwords, inspiring a Pavlovian rustle of checkbooks amongst collectors “buying with their ears.” No wonder art fairs have latched onto the phenomenon by creating special sections dedicated to gallery start-ups. At Frieze it’s called Frame; Art Brussels has Young; Art Rotterdam’s got a New Art Section. And there is, of course, LISTE, the fair designed from the start to showcase the lates... [more]

Open Heart 2013 oil on canvas 36 x 36 inches This is currently the painting that is closest to my heart. I painted it all in one go. Well actually, I stretched the canvas and painted a couple layers of white on Monday and I painted it on Tuesday. In between that time, I found out that someone that meant a lot to me had just died, not unexpectedly, since they were 90. I just happened to find out by Google searching their name on a whim. The next day, I didn’t want to sit around feeli... [more]

Jennifer and James Wallace, co-founders of nAscent Art New York, have made it their mission to champion emerging artists. Not only that, but they have made it their business. Finding it difficult to drum-up buyers let alone a buyer for emerging artists’ works, they decided to employ a different tact in bringing unknown artists to the marketplace and shifted their model to that of an art consultancy. Since 2010, this h... [more]
