Theodore Darst Takes Over. Announcing ArtSlant’s First #Instaresidency
by
9/12/14 Posted 9/12/14

We’re pumped to be doing our first #Instaresidency, where we hand over our Instagram to an artist for a week and let them sort out the rest. First up: digital artist and filmmaker Theodore Darst. Darst first caught our attention through an exhibition, Only Real, in 2014 and then on Instagram with his dynamic animations playing with form, depth, and Macklemore. Using a range of digital software programs from CINEMA 4D After Effects to Photoshop, Darst abstracts his subjects through addin... [more]

Mike Kelley at MOCA Geffen Contemporary > Los Angeles
March 31st - July 28th

To borrow a thought from Deleuze and Guattari, art is not chaos, but a composition of chaos that makes possible a wide range of unpredictable new emotions and ideas. It pushes at the borders of the imagination, inviting new ways of seeing, and sharping our capacities for critical reflection. Truly powerful art may even change how we perceive our world, and re-situate our agency within it. The Mike Kelley retrospective (currently on view at LA MoCA), reminds me of a quote by filmmaker David Lyn... [more]

Your Favorite Disney Villains as World Leaders
by
4/5/14 Posted 4/5/14

Saint Hoax is at it again, this time serving us world leaders as Disney villains. The Middle-Eastern artist (he hasn’t revealed his real name or where he lives) caught our attention when he turned world leaders into drag queens (now available as sweatshirts) and then into blow-up sex dolls. He rewrites history through visual lies, calling the work “POPlitical." In this latest iteration exploring the performativity of global politics, Saint Hoax imagines Sarah Palin as Cruella de Vil,... The exhibition is good, and congrats to the artist. A good friend of mine told me a rather disturbing story recently. He had been working with scott for years, and scott has helped him a great deal. Recently scott has not been able to sell as much art to pay his bills and has resorted to throwing events to sustain his gallery. Scott openly admits his failure, in his bathroom there is a painting that says 'BLACKBALL' which he says he got an employee to make in order to remind him how his ex-wife ha... [more]

Prohibition Gallery is a boutique gallery on W. Washington Boulevard, sharing the Culver City Arts District with other galleries such as Corey Helford Gallery and Hinge Modern (where I have previously reviewed shows and interviewed artists). With its white walls, concrete floor and barred windows, Prohibition Gallery stands in stark contrast to its neighbors. Being in the small space feels intimate. The gallery's ambiance is one of edgy youth (the gallery opened recently, in 2011) and a sense... [more]
