20100811120838-knox-martin-caprichos-copy Knox Martin at Janos Gat: A review of Caprichos by Edward Leffingwell - Art In America, October 2003
by
Knox Martin at Janos Gat Gallery > New York
April 29th, 2003 - September 12th, 2003
Posted 4/19/14

Knox Martin at Janos Gat: A review of Caprichos by Edward Leffingwell Knox Martin named his new series of generously scaled, unframed drawings "Caprichos" for the moralizing, didactic, fever-dream etchings of Goya that first attracted him as a child, 67 years ago. But there is substantial whimsy to Martin's recent phantasmagoria of animal and human forms. Ranging from roughly 2 to 7 feet on a side, they are confident, loosely drawn in pen and ink, crayon and watercolor on thin sheets of paper,... [more]

GIFs Are Offish Legit says Saatchi (and it’s pronounced “Motion Photography”)
by
4/18/14 Posted 4/18/14

Saatchi Art, the Saatchi Gallery, and Google+ just announced the winners of their first-ever Motion Photography Prize. “Motion Photography” is apparently the high-brow version of a GIF, those low-brow, low-tech repeating videos long enjoyed by Tumblr gurls and basement dwelling neckbeards, and more recently, everyone. They've also already been kind of a thing in the art world—the Pittsburgh collective VIA launched its intense 2014 T.GIF tournament last month and we hosted our own... [more]

Meredith James at Jack Hanley Gallery- New York > New York
March 15th - April 13th
Posted 4/4/14

The red-and-white checked, anamorphic floor of Meredith James’s video installation Delmar, showing through April 13th at the Jack Hanley Gallery, primes viewers to expect a puzzle. The video triptych behind the green velvet curtains at the far end of the gallery doesn’t disappoint. As a form, the triptych can be traced from the painted altarpieces of the early Renaissance to modern films. Before the now standard use of widescreen in film, Abel Gance made use of a triptych format to... [more]

20140313154726-bulltablepainting An Exercise in Looking Closely
by
Louise Hopkins at Mummery + Schnelle > London
March 19th - May 10th
Posted 3/26/14

In this exhibition, Louise Hopkins continues her exploration of everyday surfaces, including maps, magazine pages, and photographs. In each case, Hopkins manages to find a way to deal with each surface/object such that it becomes converted into a painting. Her works on maps are a case in point. For one work, she has painted over all the countries on the map with blue paint, matching the blue of the sea. On first seeing the work, you encounter a monochromatic painting. Closer inspection reveals t... [more]

by
Ryan Reggiani at Hap Gallery > Worldwide Portland
March 6th - March 29th
Posted 3/26/14

New York City-based artist Ryan Reggiani fills the gallery with an accomplished selection of works across a diverse range of media. The elegant sculpture "Untitled (Hanging)" employs straight and curved steel rods in immaculate counterposition. There is a sense of whimsy in another set of wall sculptures comprised of light bulbs and electrical cords within a metal frame. In a dramatic suite of standing concrete sculptures, the artist has stacked hollow forms around a central axis of metal rods, de... [more]

Kathleen Elliot at Tenri Cultural Institute of New York > New York
April 3rd, 2013 - May 26th, 2013
Posted 3/3/14

New York Kathleen Elliot Tenri Cultural Institute of New York by Dominick Lombardi Kathleen Elliot's glass sculptures straddle the line between ritual and playfulness. Her work, which stems from a love of natural forms, explores how the wonders of nature, big and small, have an indisputable calming effect on us as we muddle through the distractions of daily life. Works such as Whispering Vine (2008) recall ceremonial dance, as a circle of latticed glass, capped with upward-reaching leaves,... [more]

The exhibition is good, and congrats to the artist. A good friend of mine told me a rather disturbing story recently. He had been working with scott for years, and scott has helped him a great deal. Recently scott has not been able to sell as much art to pay his bills and has resorted to throwing events to sustain his gallery. Scott openly admits his failure, in his bathroom there is a painting that says 'BLACKBALL' which he says he got an employee to make in order to remind him how his ex-wife ha... [more]
