What Hans Aarsman found at the Tropenmuseum

From its extensive collection of historical photographs, the Tropenmuseum presents a selection of images curated by Hans Aarsman, the Dutch Sherlock Holmes of photography.

Originally a photographer, the author Aarsman was invited by the Tropenmuseum to explore its photographic archive, which contains over 500,000 items, the majority of which relates to the former Dutch East Indies.

“Only when pictures of bridges were being taken: the bridge had to be in the photo, and both banks. And then something of the landscape would naturally creep into the picture.” Hans Aarsman

Slow looking

Aarsman and the Tropenmuseum are both advocates for slow looking. ‘Taking the time to calmly and closely examine a photo, opens multiple possibilities for interpretation. We invite everyone to come for a session of slow looking in the Park Hall.'

Hans Aarsman doet een ontdekking in het Tropenmuseum

Hans Aarsman, de 'Sherlock Holmes van de fotografie', liet zijn oog vallen op foto's uit de rijke historische fotocollectie van het Tropenmuseum.

Het Tropenmuseum nodigde de schrijver en voormalig fotograaf uit om het fotoarchief te bekijken. Het archief bestaat uit meer dan 500.000 foto's, waarvan veruit de meerderheid is genomen in Nederlands-Indië.

“De grote verrassing van de fotocollectie was dat ik zo weinig beelden van landschap tegenkwam. Alleen als bruggen werden gefotografeerd; de brug moest erop en de oevers ook. Op zo'n moment sloop er iets van landschap in.” Hans Aarsman

Slow looking

Net als het Tropenmuseum houdt Hans Aarsman van slow looking; rustig de tijd nemen om aandachtig naar foto's te kijken en dan pas tot een interpretatie komen. U bent bij deze van harte uitgenodigd voor een sessie slow looking in de Parkzaal van 13 juli tot en met 11 november 2012.
