Kickstarter Opens First Art Exhibition in Brooklyn
by Max Nesterak

Mega-Crowdfunding website Kickstarter is opening its first art show ever tomorrow at their headquarters in Brooklyn, featuring artists who have used the platform to fund their own projects.

They have a stellar line up including the Marina Abromovic Institute, Swoon, Heather Hart, and Jeremy Baily. A couple names we’re particularly excited to see are Leon Reid IV and Saya Woolfalk.

Reid, a public artist whose recently made a foray into 3D-printing, used Kickstarter to fund a public art installation in New York City back in 2011. For Tourist-in-Chief, Reid provided some comic relief to his fellow tourist-haggard New Yorkers by transforming the statue of George Washington in Union Square into a monument to tourism-kitsch consumerism complete with all the necessary crap: “I Love NYC” hat, shopping bags, subway map, camera. You can watch his Kickstarter pitch here (he exceded his $3,000 ask by more than a hundred dollars).

Woolfalk, who we interviewed in March of last year, creates works inspired by science fiction and fantasy to challenge traditional constructions of identity. Brooklyn-based Woolfalk used Kickstarter to raise more than $5,000 to create a public installation and video exploring “the willful transformation of a culture from one form into another.” For Hybrid Cosmology, based on a fictional group of interspecies women called Empathics, Woolfalk created mixed-media installation and performance art piece at Portland’s contemporary art center Disjecta’s then newly created public art space. Woolfalk installed a number of colorful Shinto gate-like structures and, working with three Portland-based dancers, choreographed a performance art piece in which her Empathics mutate into a colorful plant.

Other featured artists include: Marshall Arisman, Amanda Browder, Seth Indigo Carnes, Steve Lambert, Ligorano / Reese, Mary Ellen Mark, NeoLucida, Eugene Richards, Paul Mpagi Sepuya, Mike Perry, Richard Renaldi, Phil Stearns, Howard Tangye, and Spencer Tunick.

The event is free and opens tomorrow (Thursday, May 15) 6-9 p.m. Kickstarter recommends RSVPing here
