This show explores the relationship between maps and the landscape - how geometry of the compass is applied to undulating geography.  Map features like compass roses, cartouches, and sight lines are explored through paintings and mixed media collages. This series is inspired not only by the design of old maps, but also their use in making decisions about directions and path.  By analogy - this show ruminates about where we have been and where we are going.  The experience of seeing a place on a map alters our perceptions of that place when we finally are physically at the site.  The map and its cardinal points influence our feelings of a place even before we get there. The Compass Rose is a key to help find our bearings and by using this imagery superimposed on landscapes, the notion of choice or decision is introduced to the painting.
